Ending Filibuster, as Dems Vow, Would Push U.S. Far Left COMMENTARY .By John LottAugust 20, 2020 Ending Filibuster, as Dems Vow, Would Push U.S. Far Left(AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster) Those who dislike Donald Trump may think it’s OK to let the Democrats run things for four years. Never Trumpers might be fearful of the leftward lurch of the Democratic Party but believe they could always fix things four years later -- that these are just the same scare tactics we hear every four years.

But things are different this time.

I wonder if the leftwads want everyone wearing masks because a mask makes it difficult to read the evil in their faces.

If they win the senate, which they probably will, then they will drop the filibuster. Then they will lose the senate in 2022 and regret their foolishness.

If we do lose the senate it will be caused by McConnell and Linda Graham, hopefully they will be gone.

The GOP will always keep the filibuster in place whenever they control the Senate. That’s because for them, the filibuster isn’t there to protect the minority party. It’s there to protect THEM when they’re in the MAJORITY. It gives them an excuse not to get bills passed against the wishes of their big-money donors when they hold 51-59 seats in the Senate.

If the GOP ever held 75 seats in the Senate, they’d impose a Senate rule requiring 80 votes to end a filibuster. You can bank on that.

Can we add a state with a simple majority vote in the Senate? I thought it took two/thirds.

Also, adding DC takes a Constitutional amendment - I think the dems recognize this.

Nope. Simple majority. Article IV, Section. 3. "New States may be admitted by the Congress into this Union; but no new State shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State; nor any State be formed by the Junction of two or more States, or Parts of States, without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress."

You clearly didn’t read the piece. The rule changes that the Democrats would be able to get through would make it very unlikely that the Republicans would win another election.

If the Dems recognize that you can’t add DC without a Constitutional amendment, you need to talk to the Dems. The House just passed a bill giving DC statehood, and almost all the Democrats in the Senate have indicated that they would pass such a bill. In addition, the Dems could pack the courts, including the Supreme Court, if they get rid of the filibuster.

I thought the dem bill that passed contemplated a Constitutional amendment.
