The other day, I read an article about how the US government is looking into moving from GPS navigation to magnetic field navigation. While GPS mapping is more accurate, it is more susceptible to sabotage and other defensive countermeasures. Not sure if this particular anomaly would affect potential navigational tools.

My question was when and how is the heat buildup released? Is it on a continuous basis, or in cycles? Are volcanoes able to handle increases alone, or maybe mid-ocean ridges unzip, etc?
