Streaming spells the end of the 'ownership' era of music, but are we ready to let go?
The Guardian ^ | Feb 1 2020 | Shelley Hepworth

My first experience with music streaming led me to accidentally and irreversibly delete my digital library.

A search of internet forums returned plenty of results from people in a similar position, and I could relate to the note of hysteria in their posts.

40 years of collecting music on physical media, apparently down the drain.

I guess I’m old. I really like owning that stuff — books, CDs, DVDs. I’m really not comfortable with the idea that “It’s probably still out there, probably still available, probably not modified beyond recognition by some censor or some lawsuit.”

I want to just HAVE it.

Fahrenheit 451 was hitting too close to home. Now it’s all remote DEL, and nobody the wiser. Plus no need for the home invasions.

On the downside, I’ll miss those comfy bonfires.

this is why people are paying so much for 300 disc carousel cd changers ?

I bought one that did not work just made bad noises, but full of cds for 5$ at a storage auction store shop just cause I figured there might be some good cds inside (there wasn’t really) I was planning on just throwing it away and told a friend, he said DUDE don’t they go for over $100 on ebay I didnt believe him, but they do, so I replaced the broken belt and sold it instead.

Why do you think Amazon called their digital reader

“KINDLE”

Since we’re in the middle of a communist cultural revolution, I would like to keep music I have. Practically every song from before the revolution could suddenly be deleted from the catalog. Numerous ones already have, and others are completely censored and butchered.

Same with books. I want a physical book. Especially anything even slightly controversial, best to have a hard copy.

Personally I don’t believe streaming is the cause. I listen to anything I want and never use any of these services.

My solution: YouTube and YouTube playlists. A few ads, not many.

Maybe I should keep my favorite music CDs.

Especially since cancel culture is expanding. Who knows what they will consider controversial next week.

You purchase digital music and that’s fine. You just need to take responsibility for your property. Figure out a way to download it to a library on your computer and also do regular backups. You can’t rely on the SAAS or cloud service. Can’t rely on a single device either.

This is the problem with digital media. You need a digital player that works with the type of medium. Anybody still have any Word Perfect documents?

If the player ceases to exist, the digital documents are useless.

Betamax.

There are benefits to physical media. I work on a computer all day, so reading another computer for leisure (a Kindle or a Nook) is unappealing to me.

Plus, I wonder about copyrights down the road. If physical media is reduced to a minor segment of the market, what is to stop copyright holders from deciding to "rent" the digital market a copy instead of "selling" one? Haven't seen "Casablanca" for a few years, and want Sam to play it again? Well, it's been two years since you last watched it and your license was for one year. Pay. The same with that classic album you love and feel like playing as you work. Time to renew your license to listen to it. Pay.

That's where I think this is going, so I will keep my books, CDs, DVDs until death.

No, because it is incredibly easy to convert .wpd documents to .doc files (or any other format you prefer).

Was a big user of WordPerfect 5.1 and also Quattro Pro 4.0 in the early 1990s but never lost any data. Converting them to new formats was a breeze.

People who write music should be able to sell their music without being forced into taking whatever some streaming service will give them.

The idea that anyone can get their music online is a good thing, as it favors those with talent who aren't part of the system. However, if no one except the streaming service executives/owners/financiers benefit from the creativity of the musicians it just isn't right.

There has to be a better way.

As an aside, I recently downloaded a new version of Microsoft Office, and it preferentially wants to store my documents in ‘the cloud’. I don't want what I write to be ‘in the cloud’. It's mine, and I decide who has access and where it is stored.

There are so many things we need to deal with as a society.

This is a very well-written article. I'm looping in a few other FR music freaks.

I still have my albums, tapes, and reel-to-reel media and physical playback machinery. But I also have lots of digital media. The key to avoiding the writer's fear is to keep the tools and media that ease your anxiety level...I never lost sleep over ditching 8-track but I'd freak if my albums were destroyed. Freedom isn't free.

I do take some umbrage at this assertion:

Research also suggests that despite the K-pop boom and the advent of Spanish lyrics in the billboard charts, western music culture is becoming increasingly homogenised.

What's become homogenized is what is POPULAR. There is zero shortage of new, good, and AVAILABLE music. There are zillions of new bands in a plethora of genres out there. The big diff is that radio and MTV aren't part of the discernment process anymore (except for college radio and XM's Underground Garage).

You, the consumer, have to do a little searching and maybe put in a little effort, but you'll be rewarded richly with new music that rivals that of your childhood heros, and will renew your hope in the arts.

And very often, those new bands have digital AND physical media. It's a match made in heaven - by the invisible hand.

Parents will find the value of physical media during power outages.

I had bought a few records (in addition to CDs), but didn’t have a record player. The records were like keepsakes, or pieces of art in themselves. Last year I bought a record player, so I’ve been buying used and new vinyl. But I’m old.

It seems kids today don’t know anything unless it comes out of their phones.

There are 3 banned episodes of south park because they have Muhammad in them. You need to get them from other places...the proper streaming sites don’t allow them.

It used to be easier to listen to music. What makes it harder today, IMO, is finding a reliable connection and device. I lose the connection frequently right in the middle of a song. I have only used Amazon cloud.

I have a lot of harder to find stuff on CD that is not on Amazon. It is a chore to convert everything to mp3. I don’t think Amazon let’s you Upload stuff like that anymore. It’s getting harder to find CD players too, especially in automobiles.

Lastly, finding music is sooo much easier. As a result I have dozens of albums or songs that I barely listen to...there is so much! It’s not like unwrapping a new CD and spending an hour immersed in it.
