On Thursday evening, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum announced that they would not be assembling the annual light installation, 'Tribute in Lights' at the Ground Zero memorial in downtown Manhattan. The powerful illuminated memorial first lit the night sky six months after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, as an homage to the fallen Twin Towers and to pay tribute to 3,000 lost lives. It has been reassembled every September since the attacks, reminding the millions who can view the powerful lights of tragedy and loss as well as the subsequent American resilience.
The Museum says that the light installation this year will not happen because the dozens of workers needed to assemble the memorial would be too at risk of infection from COVID-19.
"Tribute in Light, the worlds beloved twin beams of light, will not shine over lower Manhattan as part of this years 9/11 commemoration," The Museum said via their website. "This incredibly difficult decision was reached in consultation with our partners after concluding the health risks during the pandemic were far too great for the large crew required to produce the annual Tribute in Light. We hope to resume this iconic tribute for the 20th anniversary."
The Museum went on to say that they would go forward instead with a "Tribute in Lights" that would involve buildings throughout Manhattan lit up in commemoration. Earlier in the pandemic, the Museum announced that it would not go forward with the annual tradition of hosting victim family members at Ground Zero to read the list of names of those killed in the terrorist attack. This year, they said, they'd use previously recorded readings from prior events.
The claim by the Museum that the installation would be too dangerous for the workers involved in its construction drew immediate excoriation online from those who simply didn't understand the weak excuse for canceling such an important memorial, particularly as city mayor Bill de Blasio has championed anti-police protests and commissioned the painting of five "Black Lives Matter" murals in each borough. That effort involved several dozen city workers and volunteers in close proximity to accomplish.
“There’s the stated reason, and then there’s the real reason.”
Must not offend the Muslims....
They are liars and so is that puke mayor. All of this is to just be nasty and remove history.
NYC has many breeds of RATs. All equally foul.
The problem is that these lights are blue.
If they were powerful green lasers, akin to the lights used by peaceful protesters into the eyes of federal agents, it would have been fine.
Never forget. Never forget. What a joke. The most prevailing response to 9/11 was oh, we must protect and promote muslims!
Ive heard enough about Covid being an excuse for stopping everything. Most people just get the sniffles, if anything. Maybe excuse the geezers from the light detail, but stop using the virus to stop the world.
Well....I sure hope these endangered workers aren’t shopping at Walmart or pumping gas.
The commemoration does not signal hatred of America. So it must not be allowed.
Enough of this crap.
And the riots too.
And BTW, it was an ATROCITY, not a mere tragedy. THAT should be remembered.
The 9/11 Memorial is run as a foundation with a bunch of major NYC corporate players serving on its Board of Directors and a small group of honorary board members as well.
Michael Bloomberg is the Chairman of the Board.
Rudy Giuliani and all the living ex-Presidents are honorary board members.
The way to fix this sh!t is to deal through all THESE characters.
And if the family members of the 9/11 victims are really up in arms about this, they should seriously threaten to publicly disavow any affiliation with this organization and start another one in its place.
I saw that on TV as it happened.
The next day they were able to find Ivy League twits who couldn’t bring themselves to say that what had been done was evil or that the terrorists were evil.
Every time someone talks about the “Religion of Peace” they should hand out vomit buckets.
"Now where is my mask, those mean guns, can't offend the Muslims, oh my..."
Anything that unites the country is cancelled. Anything that divides the country is promoted. Nobody cared about COVID-19 when they were painting "Black Lives Matter" in front of the Trump Tower.
bttt
Trump should get some big spot lights and do it on the White House lawn with invited guests calling out the names; relatives if possible.
The reason given is nonsense. (Not the word that I’m thinking). This, after all, is New York, with the America-hating marxist deblobio. It must have really gotten on his nerves to see the lights reminding him that muslims flew occupied planes into occupied buildings deliberately to kill people. Every time de blobio saw the lights he was reminded of the total evil that the religion of peace is capable of, and that they should be prevented from doing it ever again.
Muck the Fuslims! Buck De Flasio too!
