The Austin City Council voted unanimously on Thursday in favor of a new city budget that sees an estimated $150 million in planned cuts to the Austin Police Department. About $20 million will be immediately removed from the department’s funding, according to the Austin American-Statesman.
The vote took place after the city council listen to hours of public testimony on Wednesday, which saw many speakers in favor of cutting the police budget.
The cuts that will take place immediately will include:
"Cutting three upcoming cadet classes, slashing overtime costs by nearly $3 million, pulling more than $3 million from commodities and contractuals, $1 million from records management and More than $220,000 combined from license plate readers and vacancies to the department’s mounted patrol.
"That money will be redirected instead to a wide variety of community programs and city departments, including Austin-Travis County EMS for COVID-19 response, mental health response, violence prevention and a family violence shelter and protection and victim services."

Yet according to polls people like and want this. Even whites by large numbers.

Not cutting the budget overall or reducing taxpayer money.
Just shuffling the money around to other departments for
them to spend.
It’s up to the taxpayers in the city to make some elected
office holders responsible. IMO
Austin? ... hardly a surprise what with all those “educated” people living there. They’ll ultimately pay the price for their lack of wisdom ... sadly, it’s the way many people must learn the meaning of “stupid”.
You should never have chosen Austin. It's the Berkeley/Madison of the southwest. This isn't sue to "insanity spreading to Texas"; it's been that way for a long time. Probably because it is the capitol and full of government employees, and it is dominated by one of the largest universities in the country.
It's a beautiful area, with lots of nice smaller towns around it, but Austin itself is a lost cause.
So the “KEEP AUSTIN WEIRD!” bumper stickers are a clue? LOL!
Cool idea! Do the “protesters” know the only thing keeping them alive is that patriots very clearly understand the cops will come after them if they did what millions of Americans would love to do?
Sure... disband the cops. Then stand in peoples yard at night with a bullhorn, block that freeway, throw that firework bomb, walk around in a mask...see what happens LOL
Redirected? The taxes were appropriated for police functions. If they are not going to use the money for the police than it should be returned to the taxpayers and in the future the citizens taxes should be reduced.
