Marijuana use during pregnancy linked to autism in babies, study says

what they call the largest study ever done, researchers found using marijuana while pregnant may increase the risk that a child will develop autism.

"Women who used cannabis during pregnancy were 1.5 times more likely to have a child with autism," said study author Dr. Darine El-Chaâr, a maternal fetal medicine specialist and clinical investigator at Ottawa Hospital Research Institute in Canada.

These are not reassuring findings. We highly discourage use of cannabis during pregnancy and breastfeeding," she said. Past studies have shown the use of marijuana during pregnancy is linked to low birth weight, impulsivity, hyperactivity, attention issues and other cognitive and behavioral issue in children, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Pregnant women who use marijuana, one study found, have a 2.3 times greater risk of stillbirth.

Whereas tobacco and alcohol are great for unborn babies? Clean living is the way to go during pregnancy ... no s***, Sherlock.

You know this is a Conservative website, not a liebertarian.. right?

What did I post that was libertarian? Do conservatives think pregnant women should smoke tobacco and drink?

2 didn’t smoke or dip. One was a pretty heavy smoker.

They used to assume that all throat cancer was caused by smoking. Now HPV I believe HPV is considered the biggest factor. But I can’t find that. I found this from the CDC:

“Cancers in the back of the throat (oropharynx) traditionally have been caused by tobacco and alcohol, but recent studies 1 2 3 show that about 60% to 70% of cancers of the oropharynx may be linked to HPV. Many of these may be caused by a combination of tobacco, alcohol, and HPV.”

Well, you’re absolutely right about anti-depressants being another possible cause. Those drugs have also exploded in popularity among women of child-bearing-age over the last couple decades. Regarding nicotine, it certainly doesn’t have the psychotropic properties of cannabis or anti-depressants. The cohort of tobacco-smoking mommies circa 1940-80 was absolutely huge. It certainly wasn’t healthy, and there undoubtedly was some fallout from that, but I can’t say that I’ve noticed mental differences between those in-utero nicotine-exposed kids and their nicotine-free counterparts. Not saying that there aren’t any, but I haven’t noticed that among the people I know.

Thanks, 2 didn’t make it. One of the non-smokers has been cancer free for several years now. But they had to do some extensive surgery on him. Had a feeding tube for a year and it severely affected his vocals. Although time has improved that.

Convinced me I never want throat cancer.

While I don’t doubt that cannabis is probably not great for a fetus, this kind of study is probably $$$ by big pharma to take any responsibility off them for their one product, the only product in the USA, that is free of any corporate liability, you know the one, the aluminum-filled vaccines given to children too young to have proper immune systems to process the metals which do enter the neuro system.

no one really knows what causes autism

My wife never smoked MJ and my son wasn't born autistic.

Anything that affects moms cognitive function affects the baby’s brain. Of course.

Marijuana. Alcohol. Antidepressants. Whatever.

Absolutely. As a recovering alcoholic I’ve seen a number of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome adults. My God, it so sad to see someone like that and to know how hard their lives are.

You ought to see the damage alcohol does. Virtually every night in the ER I work in there at least four or five loud, nasty, violent drunks. And the majority of them are women.

AND the entire county where I live is famous for its dope-smokers and lack of competency in nearly everything. Try to keep them on a job site for three days...!

Only one of my three acquaintances who toked is still living, thanks to oxygen in tanks.

We’re not the same country that fought WWII and Korea. We should be generously donating MJ to our enemies!
