President Trump says he will sign an Executive Order to ease the suffering of those harmed by the pandemic-related shutdowns and to stimulate the economy. Congress has failed to agree on a new package to accomplish these things.
Trumps Executive Order would include these four components: (1) a payroll tax holiday until the end of the year, (2) an extension of enhanced unemployment benefits until the end of the year, (3) an extension of the eviction moratorium for federal subsidized housing, and (4) a suspension of student loan payments until further notice.
Questions surround the legality of accomplishing at least some of these things via executive order. Trumps response to that might be, so sue me.
There are also questions about the fiscal impact of some of the measures, at least for those who still care about the national debt. In addition, there are questions about the efficacy of a payroll tax cut and the wisdom of extended generous unemployment benefits.
However, as a political matter, Trumps move looks like a masterstroke. Since the days of FDR, the public has always seemed to approve of presidents who act to ameliorate suffering while Congress diddles. A flurry of activity, even of the futile or potentially counterproductive kind, makes a president look energetic and caring.
In this instance, Trumps move might well force congressional Democrats to reach a deal. That outcome, too, would be a political win for the president.

Americans want an effective CEO. Emphasis on effective.
Dems bring this into court they are SCREWED!!!
I agree with your assessment. He has already proved that he actually cares about us and this country, so it seems obvious to me.
BTTT
If Democrats sue the President for relieving the suffering of Americans, the Dems will be buried for good in the general election.
Remember the good old days when the GOP was the party of fiscal responsibility? I don’t either but I did remember that at least they used to pretend. Mortgaging our children’s future, etc.
Very possibly.
Hell, I wouldnt be surprised if the Dems impeach now over this and the stupid Republicans go along it. This, is BAD.
Perhaps your issue is with John G. Roberts, not Trump.
How so? Are you unemployed? Facing eviction? A small business owner struggling to survive? People and companies are being jerked around right now. Or did you somehow miss that?
This won't eliminate the jerking around, but it will ease it somewhat.
Or do you have a better use for your tax dollars than helping your fellow citizens in need weather this unprecedented storm?
No Pollyanna you. You are absolutely correct.
The last dem did do this.
Thank you, President Trump!
You play in the shallow end
At this point I don’t think POTUS gives a damn if they impeach him or even if he loses the election. He’s going to do the best he can for the American people as quickly as he can... and perhaps pay the price for it later.
I wasnt aware that Justice Roberts had issued these orders. Roberts is an enormous dissapointment but not an excuse for rule by fiat.
And if the Dems sue...and win...Trump then can rightfully claim the Dems dont care...and then said victory will be precedent that prevents dem presidents from doing something similar. Win win. No matter how you slice it.
There a no shallow end in the world today.
What a news conference that was this afternoon! It was fantastic!!
I’m confused. Does this just mean the company will stop taking out the federal witholding from the checks? Will a person then have less to apply come April 15 to their tax bill? Or are taxes going down??
Our rights have already been trampled on and buried. Might as well put the demodummies in a vise.
