Outrageous reaction by the police. That was a mostly-peaceful hostage taking.
There is no “alleged.” He did take a hostage. He did endanger her life. He did deserve to die. He did die. He will rot and be eaten by worms.

SLCPD issues various models of Glock 9mm’s. Some officers are approved to carry their own firearms in other makes chambered in 9mm or .45.
Twice I have encounters, one in a regular grocery store, one at a convenience market, with this kind of nut, hopped up on who knows what. Both times I slipped away as the nut was moving closer and ranting louder and louder. The convenience market guy was on 911 as I ran out the door. ‘Please come quickly’, he said, ‘I don’t want to have to use gun.’ Convenience store guy was a Korean.
Would have taken the shot right there. If I have a tendency it is to jerk the trigger and it goes to right.

There’s a lot of new training philosophy out there in the tactical world for multiple shots to the hips as well as a way to put a perp/combatant on their ass. but yeah... a single shot (which nobody should be shooting a single shot in a SD situation) you’d have to pretty much blow the the brain-stem or spinal cord out. Even a shot to the heart... perp can keep going for seconds.
