At least 100 people were killed and 4,000 wounded in a massive explosion that shook Beirut on Tuesday, state-run media reported, citing the Red Cross.
Hundreds have been reported missing in the aftermath of the blast raising fears that the death toll will rise, Lebanon's Health Minister said Wednesday.
It's still unclear what exactly caused the explosion. Lebanon's Prime Minister said an investigation would focus on an estimated 2,750 metric tons of the explosive ammonium nitrate, stored at a warehouse.
Beirut's governor said the blast caused up to $5 billion worth of damage.

This is the MIDDLE EAST we’re talking about. They may not be a bunch of Nobel winners, but they sure as hell understand explosives and munitions.

Fire can absolutely trigger it under the right circumstances. It has happened in multiple ammonium nitrate explosions over the years, such as the West, TX explosion from a few years ago.
The real crime is why did the port authorities allow a fireworks to be stored right next door. That’s really dumb, yes?

That picture shows the bags to be “Nitroprill HD” which is a rip-off of Nitropril, a brand made in Australia, which is BLASTING grade AM not fertilizer.
That’s why it was seized in 2014 by the government...............
And why someone was keen to hang on to it, just in case it came in useful......

airliner shot down recently over Tehran (one of many that flew over that morning) by a trigger-happy recruit was en route to Ukraine;
