PM, defense and foreign ministers reach out to hostile neighbor through UN and international mediators after massive blast at port; president, opposition leader send condolences
Israel on Tuesday night offered humanitarian aid to Lebanon, after explosions at a Beirut port killed dozens and injured thousands, in a rare show of support for the enemy country.
Israel approached Lebanon through international defense and diplomatic channels to offer the Lebanese government medical humanitarian aid, Defense Minister Benny Gantz and Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi said in a joint statement.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he instructed his National Security Adviser, Meir Ben Shabbat, to discuss with UN envoy Nickolay Mladenov how Israel can assist Lebanon.
Mladenov confirmed Israels offer to work through the UN in a tweet, saying that The region and the world must come together to help the people of Lebanon through this time of anguish.
President Reuven Rivlin, in tweets in English, Arabic and Hebrew, added: We share the pain of the Lebanese people and sincerely reach out to offer our aid at this difficult time.
Knesset opposition leader Yair Lapid also sent his condolences to the families of the victims.
This is the time to transcend conflict, the Israel Defense Forces said in a tweet regarding Israels aid offer.

Article says local source said the blast was from confiscated sodium nitrate.
no good deed...
Good. I think the blast was probably a horrible accident, although its possible that Hezbollah was fiddling around with something. I read that the fireworks in the first building were actually small arms and munitions that had been confiscated from ships trying to smuggle them to terrorists. Maybe Hezbollah was trying to get them back. Who knows.
But Im glad Israel is offering help.

Its been said that Ammonium nitrate was stored there.
Now can that explode from simply a fire?
And now...go compare that explosion to the one that happened at Henderson NV years ago.
This was a much larger explosion and seems to me something had to be put there to set the whole thing off.
Agree
Yes
Yes, I remember McCain. He was on the wrong side of almost everything. He was never a Republican. He was not a lot of things that he said he was and did.
It was clearly detonated with high explosives. I’m not sure the captured sodium nitrate was what blew up.
This is Lebanon, Hezbollah is probably responsible for this. Or a stupid mistake of the Iranian elements in the region.

Yes, the big one was clearly a secondary explosion. One of the videos I saw (taken from relatively close up) showed what appeared (to me, anyhow) to be ammunition and mortar shells cooking off in the fires immediately before the big explosion happened.
Just talked to a guy I know from the UP of Mich who worked on a blasting crew at one of the iron ore mines.
Said that that crap would not go off unless it is mixed with something-its fertilizer, and had an catylist to get it going.
But, he said it could go off if its stored in containers and had something to set it off. A spark Might set it off but he doubted that.
They used to use that stuff and pour it into 50 foot deep hole by 16 inches wide and then they put two caps down the hole at the 15 foot and 30 foot level. They then would cap the hole with crushed rock and the holes were 50 to 60 feet apart. They’d shoot over one mile of rock-enough for the mine to work for one week. All that rock ended up the size of grapefruit.
Everyone knows what they mixed it with.
If they wanted a stronger shot, they add aluminum ++++++++ to it.
So what happened I bet, is the terrorist were playing around with ammunition there and a fire broke out and it got set off.
I would bet that Hezbollah, etc, will be really welcomed round there now.
Will be rejected.
Whatever the compound was, it was fast expanding. It sent out an impressive shock wave.
S**t happens, but why store fertilizer for 6 years?
