~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

The United States Coast Guard 230th Birthday!

USCGhistory6

Every year, August 4 is celebrated as the U.S. Coast Guard birthday, commemorating the military organization for its valor and discipline. Since 1790, the U.S. Coast Guard has kept the nation’s waterways safe, playing a critical role in national security. The U.S. Coast Guard patrols our coasts for drug smugglers, human trafficking and both domestic and international terrorism.

USCGhistory5

Created by the U.S. Congress on 4 August 1790 at the request of Alexander Hamilton as the Revenue-Marine, it is the oldest continuous seagoing service of the United States. As Secretary of the Treasury, Hamilton headed the Revenue-Marine, whose original purpose was collecting customs duties at U.S. seaports. By the 1860s, the service was known as the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service.

USCGhistory4

The modern Coast Guard was formed by a merger of the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service and the U.S. Life-Saving Service on 28 January 1915, under the U.S. Department of the Treasury. In 1939, the U.S. Lighthouse Service was also merged into the Coast Guard. As one of the country's six armed services, the Coast Guard has been involved in every major U.S. war since 1790, from the Quasi-War with France to the Global War on Terrorism.

USCGhistory3

As of 2018, the Coast Guard had 40,992 active duty personnel, 7,000 reservists, and 8,577 full-time civilian employees, and 31,000 auxiliary members for a total workforce of 87,569.

The Coast Guard maintains an extensive fleet of 243 coastal and ocean-going patrol ships, tenders, tugs, icebreakers, and 1,650 smaller boats, as well as an aviation division consisting of 201 helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft.

While the U.S. Coast Guard is the second smallest of the U.S. military service branches in terms of membership, the U.S. Coast Guard by itself was the world's 12th largest naval force in 2018.

Hey radu!

Good weekend my way, much cooler from the 105+ we had last week.

Really didn't do too much, son came over Friday to eat and hang and I visited Robin and the pups too. As soon as the cooler temps arrive in the Fall I'm going to tear down an old fence in her backyard and replace it, I've done some fencing in the past, won't be too much of a task, I like guy projects.

'Sup your way with the cotton and the kittehs?

Yay for cooling off! I didn’t know it got THAT hot up there. OOF! We’ve had some days with the heat index around 105 and hope we’re through with it for the summer.
We have a few days of 80s ahead, then the 90s come back this weekend into next week.

Robin is probably looking forward to her new fence this fall. I don’t blame you for waiting since that can be some hot work.

The kittehs are on notice tonight that death is imminent if they don’t cool their jets. LOL! The full moon has them wound up like two-dollar watches.

The cotton is in surprisingly good shape considering it hasn’t had much rain for the past month. It’s blooming now and we’ve discovered we’re VERY allergic to the pollen. We hope he NEVER plants it again.

Howdy, Kathy.

It was pretty toasty today but the next couple of days will give us a little break. There’s a SLIGHT chance we’ll get a little rain tomorrow but we aren’t holding our breath.

Glad today hasn’t been too bad for you. I hope you aren’t loaded down with too many corrections to deal with tonight.

Evening, day went pretty well, after work I went to see a truck I hope to be picking up tomorrow.

08 F250 Super duty 4WD with Plow. After a month without a truck it will be nice to have another.

Now the challenge will be to register it. Tough to do with DMV closed and open by appointment only.

It’s mostly cloudy here but I did go out to take a peek and the moon was between clouds at the time. Very bright and pretty.

A very pleasant good Tuesday morning and ((HUGS)) to everyone at the Canteen and to all our military at home and abroad. Thanks for for your service to our country and thanks Lauren for this morning's thread.

Pic from yesterday's trip to Comanche Lake.

How's everyone doing this morning?

Looks like it was another pretty day - and maybe a bit toasty - for your romp with Gizmo.

Well, it's not TOO early.
Yeah, I was up late again.

And here's wishing our Coast Guard Happy Birthday!
