Operating in the shadows of the online marketplace, specialized tech companies you've likely never heard of are tapping vast troves of our personal data to generate secret "surveillance scores" - digital mug shots of millions of Americans - that supposedly predict our future behavior. The firms sell their scoring services to major businesses across the U.S. economy.
People with low scores can suffer harsh consequences. CoreLogic and TransUnion say that scores they peddle to landlords can predict whether a potential tenant will pay the rent on time, be able to "absorb rent increases," or break a lease. Large employers use HireVue, a firm that generates an "employability" score about candidates by analyzing "tens of thousands of factors," including a person's facial expressions and voice intonations. Other employers use Cornerstone's score, which considers where a job prospect lives and which web browser they use to judge how successful they will be at a job.

I get around it all by “identifying” as a lumber sexual.
Me: “no officer, that’s not an ax handle. Thats my wife. And no, I wasn’t brandishing a weapon, I was introducing those fine folk to my ol’ lady. She’s very social like that.”
Lol.
When Credit reporting agencies start reporting social credit scores we’re all F’d.
Google, Facebook and Twitter helped me whittle down piles of resumes in short order.
TransUnion runs one of the major rental databases in the US. Not subject to standard consumer credit protection laws. You bet a company like this can keep people homeless.
This is especially important with the wave of expected evictions. Forbidden to rent based on a fuzzy logic TransUnion score, where will people rent?
When I moved back to the US after 20 years, my FICO score was zeroed out. Many complexes I applied for wanted me to pay 6 months rent to move in or get a rental co-signer or a guaranteed employment contract for 1 year. Hell, even most Craigslisters use TransUnion or other rental database companies.
Most use Checkr, which is very similar.
Glad you can’t “discriminate” in this country based on race, sexual orientation, sex, national origin, age or religion.
The problem is unconstitutional government NOT private enterprise.
This is an exact Black Mirror episode. Time to roll back technology.
Make it a point to do some off the wall and out of character things to screw with them. I leave my phone in a room with a TV tuned to Univision so they waste time marketing to me in Spanish.
It’s like lying to pollsters.
As an Indian techie guy once told me, “too much of technology”.
be sure to join the NAACP...just to screw with ‘em....
Wiser words were never spoken.
Lol. They’d be shocked when I show up to their meeting.
