Data isn't just being collected from your phone. It's being used to score you.

Operating in the shadows of the online marketplace, specialized tech companies you've likely never heard of are tapping vast troves of our personal data to generate secret "surveillance scores" - digital mug shots of millions of Americans - that supposedly predict our future behavior. The firms sell their scoring services to major businesses across the U.S. economy.

People with low scores can suffer harsh consequences. CoreLogic and TransUnion say that scores they peddle to landlords can predict whether a potential tenant will pay the rent on time, be able to "absorb rent increases," or break a lease. Large employers use HireVue, a firm that generates an "employability" score about candidates by analyzing "tens of thousands of factors," including a person's facial expressions and voice intonations. Other employers use Cornerstone's score, which considers where a job prospect lives and which web browser they use to judge how successful they will be at a job.

Hearing all this makes me happy I got into my career position years ago, before all of this nonsense data mining got started.

We are not too far away from having some version of the “social credit” score used by communists in China. The technology exists, and the bits of information about us are being collected. It won’t take much to pull it all together, if anyone is inclined to do so.

So what? Private companies doing electronic demographics. No threat to the voluntary cooperation between buyers and sellers in the marketplace FREE FROM GOVERNMENT INTERFERENCE.

The threat is when GOVERNMENT spys on us. THAT’s a big deal.

Yes, you can relax knowing no employer would use these tools to detect and winnow out wrongthinkers... smile when you’re in front of your laptop.

Big Business and Social Media can “cancel” your life quite easily.

Make you unemployable and give your home address to activists quite easily.

Haven’t you been paying attention for the past 10 or so years...

This won’t last long, because it will be deemed racist. Already, Consumer Reports and other liberal organizations browbeat auto insurance companies into not charging higher rates in minority areas. Never mind the difference in risk, because any inequality is automatically racist.

A competent hiring manager wouldn't need such service.

Which web browser can determine how successful you are on the job?

This is why any link we go to wants me to sign in to view it, I don’t.

It “ain’t for advertising” it is about this know all about your personal BS and selling that data to whom, we will probably never know.

Advertisers all ready know all they need to know about us to direct their advertising from our previous visits, purchases, returns and what we look at and read.

Credit card companies, who know your monthly credit rating want you to fill your income on most bill payments. Nope!

What do you mean “not too far away”? We are smack dab in the middle of social credits. Although we know them as Facebook and Twitter. And if you don’t socially post the correct message they will cancel you. If you speak out at work in support of President Trump your job might be canceled. What if you fail to wear a mask at the local supermarket? You stand a good chance of being assaulted . Everywhere we go and everything we do is held up to the evil light of liberal politics.

The threat is when “private” companies get special government protection, and cooperate with CIA/NSA/FBI.
The so called private company does things for government that would be illegal for Government... and in return they get government protection and riches.

It’s called fascism.
