A highly anticipated clinical trial for a potential COVID-19 vaccine managed in part by the American drug company Moderna has resulted is some adverse effects in more than half of the trial's participants, with one test group reporting "severe" symptoms.
The trial, which is also being sponsored by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, administered the vaccine "as a 0.5-ml injection in the deltoid muscle" in two shots spaced about one month apart. Two separate groups received 25-microgram and 100-microgram doses, respectively. A third group with a 250-microgram dose was subsequently added.
The vaccine "induced anti–SARS-CoV-2 immune responses in all participants," the research team reported Tuesday in the New England Journal of Medicine. Researchers said that "no trial-limiting safety concerns were identified." Yet a majority of participants still reported at least one side effect.
"Solicited adverse events that occurred in more than half the participants included fatigue, chills, headache, myalgia, and pain at the injection site," the report states. Fever, joint pain and nausea were also reported.
Side effects grew more common with more (and larger) injections, the scientists write: "Systemic adverse events were more common after the second vaccination, particularly with the highest dose, and three participants (21%) in the 250-μg dose group reported one or more severe adverse events."
Notably, every participant in the two larger-dose groups reported adverse reactions after their second injections. One study participant in the smallest-dose group, meanwhile, was removed due to having developed hives after the first round of injections.

Many people can’t get vaccinations. Cancer patients can’t get vaccinated for instance. There are about 16 million people in the US with active cancer cases at any given time. There are also people with compromised immune systems for many other reasons. All in all, there’s probably around 20 - 25 million Americans who can’t get vaccinated. Also, vaccines are never 100% effective because the body’s immune system is not 100% effective. Even if your body has been “trained” against a particular pathogen, sometimes it still fails to fight it effectively.
Your question is basically “if seat belts work, why can’t I drive drunk?”
As for me being “anti-freedom”, I figured you would completely ignore where I directly stated I am against mandated vaccines or mandated masks, but hope that people will choose to take advantage of them. I knew you would claim some silly strawman argument that required completely ignoring what I said. I should have found a bookie to put money on it.

My, as of January 2019, deceased elder sister contracted seasonal flu then pneumonia after being vaccinated for both two months before. No offense intended. I simply have little remaining and ever decreasing faith in “expert” opinion, or the pharmaceutical industry. I respect yours but choose to take a different view.”
I took a flu shot for the first time last fall. My doctor (idiot)talked me into it. Now my shoulders are SLOWLY recovering from it after about 6 months. NEVER again!
I’ve always a very strong immune system. If my body craps out after 63 years, I prefer to die.
I’ll NEVER take any kind of vaccine again.
Also, very sorry to hear about your sister. It was most likely that vaccines that gave her the illness.
Fatigue, chills, headache, and pain at the injection site don’t sound too bad, but I have to wonder what the “systemic adverse effects” suffered by the folks who got a larger or second dose were.

Back in the days of the Blu-ray/HD-DVD wars, on the various video boards there was a guy with the user name “Amir” who claimed to be, and probably was, a Microsoft engineer who worked on HD-DVD. He spent seemingly 18 hours a day on the boards spreading FUD about Blu-ray and touting the benefits of HD-DVD. He was certainly paid to shill for Microsoft. ah, pithy, pithy...of course, you’re aware that a significant number of the 157k were going to die shortly due to age, various illnesses, and compromised immune systems...I know you know that, but you prefer to play dumb...your call, I guess...
First, I am sincerely sorry for your loss. I’ve also lost too many family and friends at this point, and every one of them hurt. And there’s nothing anyone can say or do to make it alright, but I do hope time is easing the burden.
In terms of the adverse reactions, we need a lot more data about exactly how many and how severe. If 50% of the people have a low grade fever and a slight headache, that’s really negligible in the grand scheme of things. If they’re having severe reactions requiring medical intervention, that’s unacceptable. That’s why we have three phases of clinical trials: to identify any adverse reactions, see how serious they really are, and see how many people experience them, along with how effective the actual medicine/vaccine really is. It’s worth noting that the control group in any clinical trial (receiving either a sugar pill or a saline shot) will also report a certain number of “adverse reactions”. There’s a psychosomatic element involved.
Finally, I completely understand why your faith in the medical community would be hurt based on your experiences. I don’t blame you one bit for that. The Influenza vaccine is typically only 30-40% effective in any given year. Why? It takes months to make it, and in that time, Influenza has multiple strains that are rapidly mutating, and any one (or multiple) strains can suddenly take off and infect tons of people. We’re constantly behind the curve with Influenza.
Moderna’s vaccine candidate for SARS-CoV-2 is a new kind of vaccine (third generation), which doesn’t require that long, time consuming process of “growing” (technically culturing) viruses. Instead of giving us a weak or dead version of the virus or a harmless virus with the antigens of the virus we want to vaccinate against, it works by just introducing messenger RNA to our body’s ribosomes so they can directly produce the antigens themselves. The immune system reacts to those antigens and produces antibodies and lasting immunity through T-cell and B-cell activity. Because this is so much faster, it can be a really big leap forward in the fight against Influenza and other diseases that rapidly change. We could have a well targeted vaccine produced in weeks instead of months for Influenza, making it far more effective and saving tens of thousands of lives each year.
It does absolutely nothing for your sister. But it can prevent many other people’s sisters and brothers and parents and children from succumbing to illnesses like that. Our goal should be to protect human life as best we can. The vaccines we have against smallpox, polio, pertussis, and other diseases save hundreds of thousands of lives in the US every year. But we still lose people, and so more work needs to be done.

Choice. Choice is the different now, since in our modern age, we have the tools to prevent the spread of illness. It is (and should always be) the choice of each individual whether they want to make use of those tools to preserve human life. Human life is precious, regardless of its age or medical conditions, regardless of whether it's an unborn child or a great grandparent. We should make every reasonable effort to preserve human life.

I specifically stated I am against mandatory vaccines and against mask mandates. I do not support government coercion against people simply because they're making a different choice than I would. But that does not preclude me advocating for people to make the right decision. I believe people should be choosing - of their own accord - to use the tools available to try and preserve human life. I believe we have a moral obligation as human beings to do so.
I will never stop urging people to preserve human life, even as I fight against government intrusion and overreach into our personal lives.

I respect your right to make decisions about your own health and well-being and I will always vigorously defend your right to do so against any sort of government coercion. I would always urge everyone who can get vaccinated to do so in order to protect the tens of millions of Americans who can’t (cancer patients, immunocompromised persons, etc.), but I also understand that if you’ve had bad reactions in the past, there will be a lot of hesitation to continue going down that road.
In fact, it’s getting the people around you that you interact with on a daily basis vaccinated (those who can do so without serious reactions) that help protect you and your brother who can’t or won’t because of bad reactions.
Thanks for the reminder, we will have to deal with them. I remember some of the “format” wars. The intensity should give everyone a clue.
People who drive drunk often vastly misjudge how impaired they are. If they realized how impaired they were, they would make another choice, but they believe themselves to be unimpaired and get behind the wheel.
It’s a perfectly fine metaphor. It doesn’t assume malice. Just a certain level of shirked responsibility for taking reasonable precautions to preserve human life. Every one of us has a moral obligation to make all reasonable efforts to preserve human life from conception to natural death.

It gets intense at times. I know I’m not going to convince a die-hard anti-vax person, but I do know there are a lot of people who are honestly just trying to make the right decisions for themselves and their families about their health and safety. They’re my intended audience when I’m correcting misinformation about disease or vaccines. There’s no reason to be filled with fear about either COVID-19 or the vaccine candidates for it. The best approach is always to take the time to understand the available information and then make the best choices you can.
That helps me stay calm, focused, and respectful when others resort to name-calling and profane language because I won’t allow their misinformation to stand uncorrected. Good luck to you and stay safe out there!
