CDC warns Congress of ‘significant public health consequences’ if schools don’t reopen in the fall

The head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned Congress on Friday of “significant public health consequences” if schools don’t reopen in the fall.

Millions of children get nutritional and mental health services at schools, CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield told a House Select Subcommittee hearing on containing the coronavirus outbreak. He said school reopenings to be done “smartly.”

“It’s important to realize that it’s in the public health’s best interest for K-12 students to get back into face-to-face learning,” Redfield testified. “There’s really very significant public health consequences of the school closure.”

About “7.1 million kids get their mental health service at schools,” he added. “They get their nutritional support from their schools. We’re seeing an increase in drug use disorder as well as suicide in adolescent individuals. I do think that it’s really important to realize it’s not public health versus the economy about school reopening.”

Not a problem in Oregon. Kate Brown follows all CDC recommendations she agrees with.

Opening schools just may not be one of them.

The only people against reopening the schools are the teachers. Getting paid for sitting at home is good work, if you can get it.

The insanity of it all because I grew up being told and President Trump has even alluded to the notion of schools being places of political indoctrination.

The “Conservatives” told me public schools were bad now Trump and Republicans want to brand themselves as the promoters of public schools reopening this fall.

I can’t reconcile the Conservative belief system I grew up with with what the “Conservatives-Republicans” are saying right now.

But if the teachers are indoctrinating the students as Conservatives have been told by our media for years and years why should the “Conservative message” be “schools must reopen”?

I guess its to blame the teachers unions if they don’t to get political mileage for November.

I don’t believe you have ever heard a call from conservatives that, without a replacement ready, we should close down every school across the country.

Indoctrination notwithstanding, most parents - 74% in my county - want in person classes to resume so that they can go back to work. Trying to do the job of the school district along with their regular job that puts a roof over their head, food on the table, and pays for the teacher salaries, is more than most can handle.

Let’s be brutally honest here. The only reason any conservative wants the schools to reopen is so that parents can go back to work.

Gee. I guess the science isn’t that important in the Maryland, Virginia, DC area, because almost every district says “virtual schooling”. Not that it matters much with many of the districts.. they’ve been “virtually schooling” for decades, if you look at graduation rates and the ability score of those who do graduate.

There are some good schools here, of course, given the number of high-paid government employees and contractors, but the average school is well below average.

“ The only reason any conservative wants the schools to reopen is so that parents can go back to work.”

The kids won’t get sick, and very, very few of their young parents will get sick. Perhaps some of the fat, older teachers will get sick, but there are lots of young people with education degrees and large student loans who work at Starbucks that would be happy to take their places. And if granny is the one that’s really raising the kids, then maybe the kids should be raised by younger adults anyway.

You make it sound like you don’t understand that the creation of wealth allows you to live a life that is much better than just subsistence. If you saw Thursday’s economic report, you’d understand that we’re living off savings and not wealth creation.

Well, there’s also the use of schoolchildren as a pandemic control point...

Send kids back to schools so they won’t starve! Evil wicked parents don’t feed them, you know.
So what if the kids are indoctrinated with liberalism while not learning anything but about the ‘green’ climate changy thingy, social justice, BLM, the multiple ‘gender’ thing, etc. etc.

Time to send the kids back to schools so parents won’t be tempted to abuse or strangle them........(/sarc)

No, kidding aside. What should (sensible) parents do ? To school or not to school?
I guess it is to each according to their ability -

1. those who have the means - home school or pool with like-minded parents to form own mini school;

2. those not from group 1, - send kids back to schools, but teach them at home, by examples, to be responsible human beings who love their families, friends, country, i.e NOT to be liberals/leftists/PC etc.

3. for those who do not have much means - let the crooked power-hungry politicians be in control - open or not open? Just wait for their fates to be determined by the crooks while suffering without a voice.

4. those who completely agree with the morons/crooks - just go along with them and raise another generation of these morons/crooks

“If kids can’t easily obtain contraceptives and girls can’t easily obtain abortions I see that as an upside.”

Obviously you don’t know too many public school teachers and administrators. They certainly DO NOT see it that way.

School districts all around me are not going back this fall.

And our country board of health issued this:

CUYAHOGA COUNTY, Ohio (WJW) — The Cuyahoga County Board of Health (CCBH) is recommending that area schools begin the upcoming academic year by operating remotely due to elevated health risks posed by the coronavirus pandemic. The organization also advises that schools discontinue extracurricular activities.

Plus parents and teachers are scared out of the ever-loving minds! The children may not get overwhelmingly sick, but their going to bring it home to the parents. Unfortunately we’re not like many of the asian countries, Americans just don’t do pandemic very well. We’re a rebellious and stubborn lot. Plus it looks like even those nations are experiencing a surge too. Which means the draconian methods are not working and they never did work.

As a teacher in an urban low income school I learned many years ago that I’m merely a babysitter. My job is too keep these kids warehoused while parent(s), either work, get high, get their nails and hair done, watch tv, drink, whatever. While they are in school they can’t bother or steal from you. Of course many will complain, “why don’t you TEACH them”. They are incapable of learning and the district would rather I just close my door and keep them from killing each other. It’s a joke that costs 14K a year per student...

The Democrat/Left state politicans and unelected bureaucrats and their far-Left allies which are the "teachers" unions are faced with a choice:

-- Re-open schools for the benefit of the children; or,

-- Keep the schools locked down to hurt Trump.

It's clear we're learning that the "teachers" unions care as much about children as socialists care about workers, or as much as feminists care about women. To them, children, workers and women are nothing more than props used to advance a far-Left ideology.
