Trader Joe's wises up, reverses course, tells the leftist political-correctness mob 'NO!'

Have we reached Peak Corporate Cave-In?

It kind of looks like it - Trader Joe's has decided to reverse course and not change all the brand labels of its products to satisfy the wokeness demands of a tiny, largely white, racism-parsing left-wing mob. Here's their statement:

To Our Valued Customers:

In light of recent feedback and attention we’ve received about our product naming, we have some things we’d like to say to clarify our approach.

A few weeks ago, an online petition was launched calling on us to “remove racist packaging from [our] products.” Following were inaccurate reports that the petition prompted us to take action. We want to be clear: we disagree that any of these labels are racist. We do not make decisions based on petitions.

We make decisions based on what customers purchase, as well as the feedback we receive from our customers and Crew Members. If we feel there is need for change, we do not hesitate to take action.

Decades ago, our Buying Team started using product names, like Trader Giotto’s, Trader José’s, Trader Ming’s, etc. We thought then—and still do—that this naming of products could be fun and show appreciation for other cultures. For example, we named our Mexican beer “Trader José Premium” and a couple guacamole products are called “Avocado’s Number” in a kitschy reference to a mathematical theory.  These products have been really popular with our customers, including some budding mathematicians.

We constantly reevaluate what we are doing to ensure it makes sense for our business and aligns with customers’ expectations.

Reversals are the worst PR move. They managed to piss off all sides.

They claim there was no reversal. Misleading headline?

FWIW.

Actually, Avogadro’s Number is not a theory at all but a fundamental physical constant. It is the number of atoms or molecules in one mole of any element or compound. The number is 6.02214076 x 10^23. (x 10 to the 23rd power)

Today Avogadro’s number is conventionally defined, but it was originally intended to specify the number of molecules in an amount of a substance whose weight in grams was equal to its atomic mass number. Carbon was atomic number 6, mass number 12, other atoms mass numbers determined by their relationship to carbon.

Well, there it is in plain sight. Trader Joe’s has a sense of humor. The left, like the media (but I repeat myself), have none.

Actually, Avogadro’s Number is not a theory at all but a fundamental physical constant.

That "fundamental physical constant", is a constant used in a physical theory, specifically the atomic theory of matter, which has received widespread acceptance these days. When Henri Poincaré entered the École Polytechnique in 1873, the chemistry faculty was scrupulously neutral: For every atomicist hired they hired one anti-atomicist to keep the faculty balanced. There may be a lesson there for American higher education in the 21st Century.

Maybe it is too confusing to have the packaging named Karen Approved Food # 1, Karen Approved Food # 2, Karen Approved Food # 3......

but dear I thought you said 'get a box of Karen Approved Food # 411', sorry I did not hear Karen Approved Food # 311.

Perhaps the regular size is 602g, and the family size is 1023 g.

Or you could just skip the guac and go for the mole!

Well done. I was trying to come up with a good mole joke, but this will do.

Trader Joe’s and ALDI. Owned by a German company called Albrecht Discounts, ALDI is a discount grocery chain that started in Germany in 1948. ... Trader Joe’s, although it may be based in Southern California, is actually owned by Albrecht Discounts.

Errr, not really true TODAY. "Trader Joe's" is a subsidiary of Aldi Nord, a separate company established by (late) Theo Albrecht, the younger brother of (also late) Karl Albrecht, who brought the ALDI Grocery to the US as a subsidiary of Aldi Sud. The two brothers grew the Aldi chain in West Germany from a single shop run by their mother after the war. They split the very successful chain in early 1960s over the selling of cigarettes with the Nord group being the stores north of the Ruhr and selling while Sud did not sell and being south of the river.

Since the Sud Group had a store(s) in the US in 1976, the Nord group bought the California "Trader Joe's" in 1979 in order to operate in the US, the only country where both branches have stores. Everywhere else in the world, the name is Aldi but the ownership is exclusive to either the Nord or Sud Group. It appears that there is a shared supply chain for certain products but that is the limit of the cooperation. An interesting corporate tale, showing how, even in ruined postwar W.Germany, entrepreneurs could be very successful. By the Albrecht Brother's deaths, they were amongst the richest Europeans!

Joseph Hardin Coulombe (June 3, 1930 – February 28, 2020)[1] was an American entrepreneur. He founded the grocery store chain Trader Joe’s in 1967 and ran it until his retirement in 1988.

My brother and I used to drive out to Trader Joe’s original store in Pasadena from Los Angeles....it is still in operation.

Joe Coulombe died in February of this year.

Has anybody ever actually *seen* the usual image of Avogadro? Here is it. Just add toothpicks and set over a glass of water:

God puns, man laughs.

Tough crowd He's dealing with, so maybe not!
