Former U.S. Rep. David Jolly may have some bigger moves in his future.
Jolly, the U.S. Rep. for Floridas 13th Congressional District from 2014 to 2017, indicated on Twitter Sunday morning that hes considering a run for Florida Governor or the U.S. Senate in 2022.
A tweet from TV personality Lea Black kicked off the idea. Black, a member of the cast of The Real Housewives of Miami, tweeted that she thought Jolly should run for Governor.
And Jolly, about five hours later, replied to her tweet.
Thank you Lea. Very kind, he tweeted at 7:05 a.m. Havent ruled it out, but strongly considering the U.S. Senate seat in 22. Will consider whether either is the right decision and decide about this time next year. For now, Im loving the time at home with our little one! Many thanks.
Republican U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio will be on the ballot in 2022.
Jolly, a former Republican, switched to be an Independent in 2018, and he indicated elsewhere on Twitter Sunday that he is not likely to return to his old party.
He replied to a comment critical of the GOP by saying, Fully agree. Not going back.
Jolly was defeated by Rep. Charlie Crist in the 2016 election. He tweeted Sunday morning that one of the biggest obstacles to mounting a campaign for higher office would be financing it.
Honestly, the role of money big money may be the single greatest discouragement to running, he tweeted at 7:58 a.m. Its just an awful indictment of todays politics. Encouraging side is seeing recent success of small dollar campaigns. Thats the way to go.
Jolly served a little over a term in Congress before he was defeated by Crist. In 2018, he ruled out running to retake CD 13 as the seat had shifted to be more favorable to Democrats.
After leaving office, the former congressman became a staple on cable news networks for his unabashed criticism of President Donald Trump. Shortly before the 2018 elections, Jolly announced he had left the Republican party and registered as a no-party affiliation voter. Jolly said he and his wife, Laura Jolly, were motivated to leave the party to set an example for their daughter.
Its also just a personal rejection of partisanship. Its a very comfortable place for us to be, Jolly said at the time.
Update Jolly responded via Twitter to the intense speculation his possible candidacy received over the weekend:
"Lot of unexpected news today at the Jolly house. We'll make decisions in due course. But for those who asked, I'll clarify one decision with certainty. I left the GOP and am not returning. I will not be on the '22 ballot as a Republican.
Thank you friends for your encouragement."
I think even Rubio would be preferable.
He is an idiot, Jim. He is the token “Republican” on msnbc and cnn.
Can’t Florida produce anyone who will side with the citizens and the rule of law?
Micro Rubio has already voted to abandon the rule of law once, do we have to give him three tries to give away the country like Flimsey Grahamnesty?
So he plans to run as a spoiler like any good NeverTrumper would.
Announcing you are running for office is the trick leftist use when they know they will be investigated. It let’s them say “I am a threat to Trump so they must silence me.”Maybe that explains this announcement
“
If two people give him a pat on the back over this he may repent and announce he is running for President instead.
“People have contacted me demanding I run for President,” Jolly will say in an already written press statement.
Their tiny brains work that way. Don't think otherwise.
I think Desantis and Rubio should run for each other’s office.
“Getting His Jollies” Jolly...
Rubio needs an extensive tour of Florida's beautiful wetlands.
By the time the search plane flies over he will be waving like a Cuban on an inner-tube.
LOSER!!! He’s BULL-****.
Rube is NOT MUCH BETTER
Is that PHONY Republican, Charlie Creepy Crist, still in the HOUSE?
WTF??? De Santis is a GREAT GOVERNOR!! RUBE would be AWFUL!
Background facts for those not knowing David Jolly. Prior US Congressman in this CD was C W ‘Bill’ Young (R) who held this seat from election in 1970 to his death in 2013. The special election to fill out his term had his general counsel, David Jolly, running against an imported Democrat and winning by 3k votes. He was only lightly opposed in the 2014 General Election months later.
By 2016, with the 2010 Census, this FL-13 CD had its boundaries shifted to include heavily Democrat Saint Petersburg, home of inconstant Charlie Crist, former GOP Governor / Independent US Senate candidate / now loyal Pelosi Democrat. In 2016 Jolly lost to Crist by 13k votes and following this loss quickly identified himself as a Swamp Dweller & Lobbyist, moving back to DC and officially leaving the GOP in 2018.
In short, he was never conservative except to keep office, he was elected on the death of his boss and demonstrated nothing that really differentiated him from his inconsistent successor. David Jolly, you leave a slime trail wherever you go!
David Jolly is an original four-flusher; we will never be rid of him. He’s, in my opinion, odious.
Yes he is in the US House but as a loyal Pelosi Democrat. He ceased being GOP after he chose to run for US Senate instead of the Florida Governorship (2010). When he lost the GOP Primary to Marco Rubio, he then turned 'Independent' for a run during the General Election, losing to Rubio but beating the Democrat candidate, Kendrick Meeks.
In the next election cycle of 2012, he changed his registration to Democrat and endorsed President Obama. In the 2014 Florida Governors race, he lost, as a Democrat, to his GOP successor, Rick Scott, by a 1% margin / 64k votes. It was in 2016 that he ran for the US House from his home and CD of Saint Petersburg & Pinellas County (FL-13) beating a rather squishy 1 term GOP incumbent, David Jolly.
As a voter here, I am supporting Anna Paulina Luna, Air Force vet and a GOP counter to the looks of AOC! Wish us luck to kick Crist to the side of the road!
GOOD LUCK!!
Remember this ex-Republican turd ? Bill Young should’ve groomed a more reliable successor. He should just make his switch to the Demonrats official and stop calling himself an “Independent” when he isn’t.
He ain’t running for shit as an “I”, the democrats would Howard Shultiz him.
And he would lose a rat primary. So he can just go piss into a hurricane.
Turns out he an Crist are damn clones, with the possible exception that Jolly doesn’t put other men’s tootise rolls in his mouth like Charlie.
What race that was, Jim Jeffords vs. Justin Amash.
