WASHINGTON — President Trump on Monday told reporters has no plans to visit the casket of civil rights hero John Lewis as he lies in state in the US Capitol.

“No, I won’t be going, no,” Trump said when asked if he would travel on Monday or Tuesday to pay his respects.

Let’s not forget ‘they’ asked him NOT to attend. As always, he always seems to make the right move. Bury the guy who couldn’t honor the duly elected President of the Worlds most Long Lasting Democratic Independent Gov’t.

Nah! Louis didn’t attend Trump’s innauguration. The family would just use the approach as a chance to mouth off and try to make political hay. Let Mike Pence represent the Trump Admin. I’ll be amazed if they don’t badmouth Pence and accuse him of white aggressions. They never let a “crisis” go to waste.

Our president isn’t a coward afraid of a virus.

He's not stupid either. There will be plenty of folks with Covid there...you can bet on it.

Pence is going. Move on.

If I had to guess, I'd guess security played into the decision. This is not your usual controlled, inside the Capitol viewing:

With the Capitol closed to the public amid the coronavirus pandemic, Mr. Lewis will spend only a few hours lying in state under the Capitol dome after an invitation-only ceremony reserved exclusively for members of the legislative branch on Monday afternoon. About 80 lawmakers are expected to attend, according to a Capitol official.

Afterward, Mr. Lewis’s coffin will be moved outside to the Capitol steps, and members of the public will be able to line up — with masks required and social distancing enforced — to view it from the plaza below on Monday evening and all day Tuesday.

Among those paying their respects will be Vice President Mike Pence and Joseph R. Biden Jr., the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, according to their public schedules. President Trump is not scheduled to attend.

Too many people who just might have the virus. He’s being cautious and he is correct.

Biden and his wife paid their respects to Lewis in private. If Trump wanted to pay his respects it would have been done the same way. But he hated Lewis and Lewis hated him so visiting would have been hypocritical. It's no different than when McCain died. Trump stayed home then too.

Ah yes, let’s do the old Julius Caesar routine:

Julius Caesar, Act III, Scene II

Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears;
I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him.
The evil that men do lives after them;
The good is oft interred with their bones;

I have no problem with his call.

People would criticize him if he went and they'll criticize him if he doesn't. No win situation so might as well stay home.

My brother in-law died and he was not allowed a funeral. We had a burial and were limited to 10 people. He was not embalmed.

It's disgraceful that they give themselves massive state funerals while regular citizens had to endure loved ones dying alone and then not being able to get any sort of proper closure, all while insisting that we must still live under their boots.

Very sad.
So they’re not doing embalming?

I guess Lewis must be embalmed or he wouldn’t be out on his “tour” in 90 deg weather.

About 80 lawmakers are expected to attend, according to a Capitol official.

Out of 535 members of Congress only 80 will attend? I guess he wasn't really that popular among his "peers". Probably mostly the Congressional Black Caucus.

At the time (April) they were not, even though his death had nothing to due with China virus. Because there were only three men at the burial we all were pall bearers and nobody told us he hadn’t been embalmed. He wasn’t a small man but I’ve been a pall bearer of many people, big and small, and it’s not an issue. Different story if they aren’t embalmed, which I discovered. I don’t know if they’ve resumed embalming, I do know funerals are now allowed up to some limit.
