Why Hundreds of Mathematicians Are Boycotting Predictive Policing Some academics are calling the controversial practice a "scientific veneer for racism."

Several prominent academic mathematicians want to sever ties with police departments across the U.S., according to a letter submitted to Notices of the American Mathematical Society on June 15. The letter arrived weeks after widespread protests against police brutality, and has inspired over 1,500 other researchers to join the boycott.

These mathematicians are urging fellow researchers to stop all work related to predictive policing software, which broadly includes any data analytics tools that use historical data to help forecast future crime, potential offenders, and victims. The technology is supposed to use probability to help police departments tailor their neighborhood coverage so it puts officers in the right place at the right time.

Perhaps, if you merely glance at some of the "tips" in the article, you may agree that they should change the name to 'Popular McCommies'. Of course if you look at the top of the page you will see that, if you don't already know, you're part of the problem(BurnerLooterMayhem) and need to send money. As if the "how to topple a statue" article wasn't enough................. Hey 'pm'------fuh cough!

Counting is so racist!

If we ignore numbers they will just disappear, works well for black crime as well.

So, they had to write algorithms and computer software to do what any police officer/department can do on the fly?

.. and the facts get erased.
Attempted erasure of the truth is a helluva tool, but only goes so far.
It’s use is brief and retrospection tells the rest.
The silent majority will rise again, have faith.

In other words, facts (along with math, science and statistics) are racist.

At first glance I thought these people are leftist morons. Maybe they are, but just keep in mind that there’s a fine line between predictive analytics and a police state.

My prediction is that these computer programs will not stand up to any legal scrutiny — and cases will be thrown out of court on the grounds that these tools do not constitute “probable cause” for any police activity that results in a criminal prosecution.

How would using statistical analysis to determine when and where police patrols are assigned impact probable cause after a crime has been committed? It’s not as if the cops are arresting people based on an algorithm.

We all know that 70 something white ladies in Sunday School at the local Methodist church commit most of the country’s violent crime./s/

In the real world these types of analysis are most likely to protect average black folks in areas of high black crime.

Only an elite white racist academic thinks that is a bad thing.

The whole argument actually goes right to the core of the question about whether the police should ever be used in a “crime prevention” role under constitutional standards.

Could you possibly answer my question? Or are you saying police should never be on patrol, and sit in their percent stations until they receive a call that a crime has been committed?

SoCal Pubbie :" How would using statistical analysis to determine when and where
police patrols are assigned impact probable cause after a crime has been committed?
It’s not as if the cops are arresting people based on an algorithm."

So lets ask the intelligent question :" Who benefits ?"
The criminal element whereby police are assigned where they are needed !
Also, statistics show that black-on-black homicides are more numerous that the alleged police-shoot-blacks
the faulty hypothesis which gave rise to the "protests" in the first place.
The person who benefits is someone who benefits from chaos, crisis, division, and crime. Know anyone like that ?
I do ! Try an international financier who creates crisis and chaos, and then he 'shorts' the market.

Police patrols are not compatible with personal freedom.

This idea that Americans have come to take for granted -- that we need police officers "to serve and protect" us -- has no place in a free nation. This country was built by people who were perfectly capable of PROTECTING THEMSELVES.

The purpose of "law enforcement" isn’t to protect the citizens at large. It’s to ensure that accused criminals are apprehended and protected so they can be subject to legitimate trials instead of hunted down and given justice by armed vigilantes.

We -- including conservatives -- have forgotten this fundamental aspect of the U.S. legal system over the years. As a result, we no longer think of the police as law enforcement officers and instead see them as nothing more than armed security guards doing a job that we are too lazy and irresponsible to do ourselves.
