At least three federal officers could be left permanently blind after they were attacked with lasers by protesters in Portland this week.
The officers, part of the Federal Protective Service, were injured during rioting in the city on Monday night as they attempted to keep anti-government demonstrators from gaining entrance to a federal courthouse in the city's downtown area.
When officers responded to put out these fires, glass bottles were thrown and lasers which can cause permanent blindness were shined in their eyes, said Deputy Director of Operations Richard Cline. We have three officers who currently have eye injuries and they may not recover sight in those eyes from those laser attacks.
Demonstrators set fires near the property, broke windows, and spray-painted the barricades outside the courthouse.
Cline said the FPS has purchased anti-laser glasses that officers are now wearing as they guard the federal complex.
Seven people were arrested during the demonstrations Monday night, police said.
President Trump last week deployed federal officers to the city to protect the area from what he described as "anarchists" who "hate our country."

Again depends on the laser
Green lasers that the public can purchase would only give a burn to the fovea. This leads to perhaps a dark spot in the field of vision. This disappears as the brain adjusts to it. A hand held green laser has a rapid drop off in power over distance. Moreover the beam quality spreads and is not longer as dangerous with travel through the atmosphere
Get back to me in a month. Give the results of their fovea photos. Then we can discuss

Says a man with NO laser experience whatsoever
“You do not understand how the eye works and is constructed”. You know NOTHING about lasers. You know zero about laser safety and laser damage.
Too bad we didn’t bet money on this. You are wrong on all three assumptions. Ever hear of Raman and SERS.
A 250mw green laser is not a toy

The lasers used in Seattle were pretty close, guessing from the video’s, 30 yards.
Chart shows 367 ft. eye injury hazard.
Flash blindness over 1700 feet.
I don’t scoff at the risk.
It is a focus issue too.
I did not say there was no risk
The fact that you saw them on the video says the beam had already spread
I was only commenting on permanent damage
And do you know that it was 250 mW??
What is sold to the public is rarely over 10mW
No, I don’t know.
The video’s I saw last weekend have been removed from Twitter. They were too revealing about how bad the situation was. Especially how many lasers flashing around.
ComDem’s cannot have the truth seep out into the media.
One reporter was doing a great job of covering the past few weeks in Seattle. Twitter is messing with him now.
Ive seen the videos. The laser flashes that can be seen indicate beam spread due to travel distance and interaction with the atmosphere. That means the beam will not be tightly focused making it less dangerous.... not harmless just less dangerous
I was more concerned with the other implements that KLANTIFA was using. Those are often deadly
“Green lasers that the public can purchase”
I’ve seen 533 nm hand helds that put out over 200 mW with a tight beam spread of .7 mrad.
I agree that permanent sight loss is rare. I do know people that see a permanent crescent shape in their visual field but they are otherwise OK.

Early in my career I got burned because of a mistake I made. The right eye was wonky for a few weeks. Eventually my brain adjusted. Now that Im older I can see the airy disc on many occasions. Interesting thing is that the burn doesnt show on any of my retinal photos that Ive had taken over the years. The visual defect is no more annoying than floaters
The leasing material in all of these are diodes....notoriously lousy for beam structure
Darned auto correct. Should have been lasing
