Lessons From 1976 Swine Flu: ‘Scores’ Dead After 46 Million Vaccinated Unnecessarily
National File ^ | July 22 | Tom Pappert

Posted on 07/22/2020 11:01:36 AM PDT by RandFan

In 1976, the Center for Disease Control made the unprecedented decision to vaccinate the United States against swine flu, fearing that it would become a pandemic in the country that would rival the Spanish Flu of 1918-1919. Later, it was established that the mass vaccination attempt was largely unnecessary, and may have proved fatal for some of the 46 million Americans who received it in the massive effort.

After Americans began dying from swine flu in the mid 1970s, then-CDC director Dr. David Sencer made the unprecedented decision to vaccinate millions Americans against the illness in a massive campaign that some say left 25 dead and “scores” more dead after being temporarily paralyzed.

After announcing his mass vaccination campaign, Sencer ordered 200 million doses of the vaccine manufactured, and President Gerald Ford promoted the vaccine by being photographed receiving it at the White House.

Less than two weeks after the program began, however, 25 Americans died after receiving the vaccine.

“Scores of others were affected by a mysterious form of progressive paralysis called Guillain-Barre syndrome,” the Washington Post noted. “Many became temporarily paralyzed, and several died.”

Sencer vehemently denied that those deaths were related to his vaccine, though contemporary experts warned that the swine flu vaccine had not been properly tested and could not be assumed safe.

Ultimately, the swine flu vaccination program began on October 1, 1976, and was suspended in December of the same year.

Was in the navy. We were ordered to take the shot and then they demanded that we sign a paper saying that we had volunteered for the shot.

Raises a question. How many public school teachers have missed a paycheck, the last few months?

They made us get the Swine Flu shot in Air Force boot camp at Lackland in early October of 1976. I got sick enough that I almost collapsed on the PT field and was in the infirmary for almost a week. I almost missed my last week of BMT because of it.

Yes, I remember this. There was a tremendous amount of hype surrounding swine flu, it was going to be a repeat of 1918. Mass hysteria, human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together. Big push for a vaccine and push for everyone to get it. My high school sent home a permission slip to get it at school. Like many teenagers, I wadded it up and tossed it. Glad I did, now.

This whole covid thing reminds me of the swine flu fiasco. I won’t be getting this shot, at least not until the bugs are worked out and potential adverse effects are noted.

To the feeble minded and uneducated, a vaccine means guaranteed immunity from a disease and is perfectly safe so it should be mandated of all people.

I had Hong Kong flu too. I was out of school for 3 weeks. I don’t think I ever had a worse case of the flu

“ Was in the navy. We were ordered to take the shot and then they demanded that we sign a paper saying that we had volunteered for the shot.” ********** Lol, reminds me of boot camp. Think it was the first or second day, standing in formation in the hot Louisiana sun; savings bond forms were passed out. Then, we were told we could fallout as soon as we filled out our form. Good motivation for sure 🙄

If you’re old enough to remember this you’re old enough to remember Government Cheese too.

FedGov was a series of total eff-ups in the 70’s.
No wonder we handed the keys to Reagan.

KrogerPro. Hamburger where something like 1/3 of the beef had been replaced with ground soy product. My poor mother having to cook family meals in those days.

[[some say left 25 dead and “scores” more dead after being temporarily paralyzed. ]]

So which is it? 25 dead? Or "scores dead"? What was the total number who died? and could they be directly related to the vaccine?

[[“Scores of others were affected by a mysterious form of progressive paralysis called Guillain-Barre syndrome,”]]

When did this happen? Immediately after getting the shot? While shots can cause GB syndrome, many other things can as well- if only 'several' people developed GB syndrome after the vaccines were given to 46 million people, out of 46 million that got the shots- - i would think that statistically, this would happen in a population of 46 million people had they all NOT been given the vaccine too-

-in the US alone, 2,720 get GB syndrome every year-

It definitely contributed to Ford losing to Carter.

My mother would never DREAM of taking a handout, so nobody from our house went and stood in line for the free government cheese.

But we knew a lot of people who did. And all agreed that it was the best damned cheese they ever had. Far superior to anything you could guy at the grocery store with your hard-earned paycheck.

That just enraged my mother even more.

Ford pardoning Nixon was really what did it. That rubbed a whole lot of people the wrong way as I recall.

I just got off a 7 day SAC alert, before we left the alert facility we got swine flu shot in one arm and regular in other. Commander said if you get sick it will be on your 4-day break.

The whole family caught it and maybe the two youngest went to the doctor. I remember the body aches and moderate high fever more than other symptoms. Drank a lot of water and orange juice and took aspirin to lower the fever. I didn’t have a lot of sick leave at the time and probably only was off work for four or five days. After a week and a half or two weeks I was back to normal.

Never needed the vaccine since I had the virus before the vaccine was ready.

That cheese was served in military chow halls during the Reagan years and it was good.
