At least 15 people were injured, some critically, when they were shot while attending the funeral of 31-year-old Donnie Weathersby, a recent victim of gun violence himself.
In a Wednesday morning update, police said that 10 of the victims were female and five were male.
"I saw body after body on the ground," said witness Arnita Jeder. "It's a war out here … Why are they shooting like this? This is ridiculous. Enough is enough."
According to reports, victims ranging in ages between 21 and 65 were entering and exiting the Rhodes Funeral Services funeral home when assailants in a black car drove by and opened fire. Many of the attendees were armed and began firing back at the vehicle, which sped away before crashing into a parked car. The vehicle's occupants then scattered and fled on foot.
Sources indicate that police had been warned there could be a retaliatory strike at the funeral and had assigned a squad car to keep watch.
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot lamented the violence in a series of tweets.
At least one of the victims was believed to be an innocent bystander taking a smoke break when she was caught up in the crossfire.

During the bull riding event, a bull got loose and went THRU THE FENCE where an really elderly woman was sitting in a lawn chair.
