Houston police and fire officials are responding to reports that documents are being burned in the courtyard of the Consulate General of China in Houston, according to the Houston Police Department.
How about: Fire danger is high.
Good one.
Riot ongoing in Chicago 100 cops against 150 idiots, this after a shootout at a funeral with 14 victims earlier. Chicago cops doing great job all up and down the chain of command.
Me too!
Bttt
Mine too.
It’s a common thing to do if you are about to abandon your consulate or embassy - torch your secrets and communiqués - particularly if your home country is about to do something to piss off the country you’re in. Goes back at least a few hundred years.
One reason not to do it until the very last minute is that it signals the host country that something may be coming.
If for no other reason than burning embers may escape their property and ignite fires in the surrounding area. Texas is under a burn ban because there’s so much dry vegetation nee ‘tinder’ around.
Mass defection?
Perhaps the goal is like Nixons with respect to North Vietnam, to make the opponent think you are capable of something horrendous so that it backs off?
Your tag line is a clue.
When the Chinese forced down our reconnaissance plane, we did nothing.
I suspect they will try something similar only more aggressive.
Probably involving the navy operating in that part of the world.
I hope not.
Per various Twitter posts- the Chinese embassy is being evicted.
So..just prepping for moving day? Or...
Huawei’s HQ in the USA is in Plano Texas (Dallas suburb, a few hours drive away).
Maybe that was the closest consulate for them to hide their files.
There is this from a week ago:

Evicted or evacuated? The first is a decision by the US government, and it would violate international law. The second is a decision by the Chinese government and would not.
Evicted, per the article:
A Houston police source told KPRC 2 that the consulate and a compound on Almeda Road, where many employees of the consulate live, are being evicted on Friday at 4 p.m.
Either sending a message (see the exposed Chinese agent article upthread) or they’re destroying documents and have so many to dispose of by a deadline that they can’t dispose of them through their normal secure means. I.E., have to dispose of 50K pages of documents in 24 hours but their secure shredders can physically only shred 30K in that amount of time.
The point......!
There is absolutely no reason for them to be concerned about our seeing what is in their files so long as relations between the two countries are normal.
No court, no cop, no senator....no one can see anything unless they are invited to see.
If there is any reason other than a house cleaning, it is something about which we should be concerned.
Hopefully they are doing it just to worry us. They may be reading this and laughing at us.
Half a billion Chinese might be dead soon from flooding if and when the 3 Gorges dam lets go. Might be the CCP officials are about to cut and run. They won’t warn the people. At least not about an iminent dam failure, thats admitting defeat.
If this is correct, then it is a normal house cleaning project and we can all go to bed and forget it.
