Texas GOP ousts chairman, picks tea party firebrand Allen West to lead in 2020 elections

AUSTIN – Conservative firebrand and former Florida congressman Allen West will lead the Texas Republican Party into the 2020 election, after ousting the current chairman early Monday during a convention marred by technical difficulties.

He vowed to use his post to push back against Democrats’ “progressive socialism.”

“I am sick and tired of Republicans being on their heels, being on the defense, always being reactionary with a party that as we see right now-- they don’t stand up for the rule of law, they stand for rule of the mob,” he said during a victory lap on conservative media.

The retired Army lieutenant colonel was propelled into Congress for a single term amid a tea party wave in 2010, but lost his reelection bid in a staggeringly costly race in which he spent $17 million. The Democrat who defeated him called him a right-wing extremist and spent less than a quarter of that.

West handily out-raised Dickey in the contest, raking in over $130,000 within the last six months, according to reports filed with the state ethics commission. Dickey raised about $30,000.

The ouster comes after a strained convention that was shifted online at the 11th hour, after Houston’s Democratic mayor barred an in-person event and courts rejected the party’s effort to overturn that amid the coronavirus epidemic. Technical difficulties plagued the event, pushing delegates to postpone unfinished business.

In a virtual event Monday, Dickey handed off the convention gavel to West.

Not that I know of, but he did just launch a resign/impeach movement against Wolf.

He’s a good one, for sure.

Thanks for speaking well of James. He does not deserve to be maligned or berated for a very fine job. People like Allen West only come along a few times in any generation. Before too many years, I hope to vote for him for President! And we will need James back! I think I’ll email him, tell him what a fine job he did and apologize to him on behalf of all of the people who aren’t thinking. . .none of them could hold a candle to James and certainly not to Allen West.

Excellent!

If I were to run for President, I’d have him as my running mate, or I’d ask him to be my SecDef.

Allen West should have been our first ‘black’ President.

I didn’t see this coming!

When did West move to Texas? I saw about his motorcycle wreck, but I just (wrongly) assumed that he was on a motorcycle tour.

voted for Allen West in this election, but not to reject James Dickey. He has actually done a very good job and it was a tough choice. However, when you have the opportunity to elect a stellar figure like Lt. Col. Allen West, it must not be passed up. I’m very proud of Mr. Dickey and very excited to have Lt. Col. West leading our party

Well said, I did the same

Congratulations to Lt Col West. I had the opportunity to meet him at the NRA Convention in Atlanta. Speaks like a regular guy. Had the opportunity to listen to him and Sheriff Clarke address a roomful of some bigwigs from the NRA. Both of them knocked it out of the park. No pre-written speech. Just talking to folks.

If he’s going to save Texas and help in saving this country, he has to rid Texas of the liberal disease that has been infecting it for the last 12 years, or more, thanks to former Governor Perry.

Yes!

Listened to Col West’s interview, on Steve Bannon’s War Room podcast, the day after he won this election. He sounded great.

West survived a 75 mph motorcycle accident that happened on I 35.

He thanked God for his survival and recovery.

He’s ready to get to work to not just keep TX red, but, to gain even more Republican seats, across the Lone Star state.

I liked his plan of attack, that he talked about and I plan to support him with a donation of time and $$.

@AllenWest
