As Trump Ignores Virus Crisis, Republicans Start to Contradict Him
NY Times via Yahoo News ^ | July 20, 2020 | Alexander Burns, Jonathan Martin and Maggie Haberman

President Donald Trump’s failure to contain the coronavirus outbreak and his refusal to promote clear public-health guidelines have left many senior Republicans despairing that he will ever play a constructive role in addressing the crisis, with some concluding they must work around Trump and ignore or even contradict his pronouncements.

In recent days, some of the most prominent figures in the GOP outside the White House have broken with Trump over issues like the value of wearing a mask in public and heeding the advice of health experts like Dr. Anthony Fauci, whom the president and other hard-right figures within the administration have subjected to caustic personal criticism.

They appear to be spurred by several overlapping forces, including deteriorating conditions in their own states, Trump’s seeming indifference to the problem and the approach of a presidential election in which Trump is badly lagging his Democratic challenger, Joe Biden, in the polls.

Once-reticent Republican governors are now issuing orders on mask-wearing and business restrictions that run counter to Trump’s demands. Some of those governors have been holding late-night phone calls among themselves to trade ideas and grievances; they have sought out partners in the administration other than the president, including Vice President Mike Pence, who, despite echoing Trump in public, is seen by governors as far more attentive to the continuing disaster.

“The president got bored with it,” David Carney, an adviser to the Texas governor, Greg Abbott, a Republican, said of the pandemic. He noted that Abbott directs his requests to Pence, with whom he speaks two to three times a week.

In his home state of Kentucky last week, Sen. Mitch McConnell, the majority leader, broke with Trump on nearly every major issue related to the virus.

Just more shitty lies from the New York Times-a-wasting.

Pathetic and hateful drivel.

I can get more truth from chicken bones on the head of an oil drum.

The President is responsible for the health guidelines, etc, really?

What has Fauci and his band of Leftist’s been getting paid for all these years and during the ‘pandemic’?

The only question is when did they script this stuff.

Was it when they planned the release of the virus? Or is it more like last minute improvisation because their plan isn’t going like they wanted?

President Donald Trump’s failure to contain the coronavirus outbreak and his refusal to promote clear public-health guidelines

Leftist lie of the hour/day/month.

ANY Repub who buys into this lie needs to switch parties and go speak at the DNC "convention" with their traitorous pal, John KaSick.

Probably mid-course correction. Don’t like the idea of GOP people talking to these three.

NYT wants so badly for Trump to make an authoritarian move on states...They clearly can’t see that he has, by leaving decisions to the states, been 3 moves ahead of them.

Millions of 8th graders missed their promotion ceremony and will now start their “high school” virtually. They won’t make any high school friends. No sports, drama, music.

Millions of HS seniors missed their graduations and will now start their “colleges” virtually. They won’t make any college friends. No sports, drama, music.

Millions of K-12 kids stuck at home in front of screens. All day. Or put in daycares, which aren’t closed, instead of schools.

I feel for students. They don’t get this virus much, or suffer from it much, or transmit it much.

But the teachers’ unions have destroyed American children’s futures.

I know Trump is bored with virus stuff, but this is heartbreaking. I’m hopeful this week there will be some sort of federal movement toward school reopenings.

President Donald Trump’s failure to contain the coronavirus outbreak

Pretty sure Trump turned over the responsibility to those who demanded it, the state Governors.

Correct.

If he’s not doing anything then how can they contradict it?

Thanks....I (obviously) didn’t read far enough past the ‘some Republicans’ part :-)

I looked up David Carney....advisor to TX Gov Abbott...here’s what I found...

David M. Carney is a principal in Norway Hill Associates (NHA); a political campaign and issue management firm based in New Hampshire. NHA provides long-range strategic planning and short-term project management to political campaigns with experience in all 50 states.

Carney served as the White House Director of Political Affairs for George H.W. Bush. He has been involved in Texas politics since the early 1990’s when, working for the NRSC under Phil Gramm, he oversaw the special election victory of Kay Bailey Hutchinson to the United States Senate. Since 1997 he has served as the principal general consultant to both Rick Perry and current TX Governor Greg Abbott.

And, here’s his twitter feed. ... I see he supports the mask mandate...
