“The president got bored with it,” David Carney, an adviser to the Texas governor, Greg Abbott, a Republican, said of the pandemic. He noted that Abbott directs his requests to Pence, with whom he speaks two to three times a week.

Thanks....I (obviously) didn’t read far enough past the ‘some Republicans’ part :-)

I looked up David Carney....advisor to TX Gov Abbott...here’s what I found...

David M. Carney is a principal in Norway Hill Associates (NHA); a political campaign and issue management firm based in New Hampshire. NHA provides long-range strategic planning and short-term project management to political campaigns with experience in all 50 states.

Carney served as the White House Director of Political Affairs for George H.W. Bush. He has been involved in Texas politics since the early 1990’s when, working for the NRSC under Phil Gramm, he oversaw the special election victory of Kay Bailey Hutchinson to the United States Senate. Since 1997 he has served as the principal general consultant to both Rick Perry and current TX Governor Greg Abbott.

And, here’s his twitter feed. ... I see he supports the mask mandate...

Actually, no. Once the (correct) decision was made to let state and local officials deal with their COVID-19 response efforts on their own, it simply wasn't a matter of national concern anymore.

The only role for the Federal government at this point is for the Federal courts to protect the constitutional rights of American citizens who are living under increasingly totalitarian governors and mayors.
