US President Donald Trump declined to say the Confederate flag was an offensive symbol in an interview broadcast on Sunday, saying it is a source of pride for people who love the South.
The Republican president was asked on Fox News Sunday if the flag, a symbol of US slavery and white supremacy for many Americans, was offensive.
It depends on who youre talking about, when youre talking about, Trump responded. When people proudly had their Confederate flags theyre not talking about racism. They love their flag, it represents the South. They like the South I say its freedom of many things, but its freedom of speech.
Trump has in the past appeared sympathetic to the flag and symbols of the Confederacy of the 1861-65 Civil War.
In 2017, he criticised the removal of monuments to the Confederacy and said there were very fine people on both sides of a deadly clash in Charlottesville, Virginia, over the removal of a statue of Confederate General Robert E Lee.
Earlier this month, he criticised NASCARs ban of the Confederate flag from its events.
Breaking with several of his fellow Republicans in Congress, Trump has promised to veto the annual National Defense Authorisation Act over an amendment to remove the names of Confederate generals from military bases within a year.

When asked whether he supported South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haleys decision to call for the Confederate battle flag to be taken down from out front of the State Capitol building, Trump said he did.
I would take it down, yes, the billionaire real estate mogul said. I think they should put it in a museum and respect whatever it is you have to respect.

Lincoln would disagree with you. By the end of the war, with more than a half-million KIAs, Lincoln did not instruct his generals to arrest the other side or its officers. He let the rebels go home to re-build their farms. He used the words, "with charity for all, and malice toward none." He wanted to save the Union, and wanted peace--which means respecting others' sacrifices, even if they were on the other side in a terrible strife, and recognizing them as fellow descendants of the Founding Fathers.
If it's not your flag, you're not obliged to clutch to it. But men like General Robert E. Lee were honored in life and in death by North and South alike. Were they missing something? Do the statue-pullers know better?
By the way, I'm a Yankee. It's critical that Trump "go there" and be willing to remind everyone that it's a big country, we come from different places, and that we respect each other in our loyalty to the Constitution and in our brotherhood with those who, as the Lord reminded Moses about the Egyptians, were "sojourners with you."
So if they ban the Confederate Flag, should they ban the BLM Flag?
I’ll remember it. And I’ll honor the greatest country in the history for the world that came out of that horrible time. Not Southerners and not Northerners. Americans.
I think he’s one hundred percent correct, I don’t think it’s an error. Of course I’m from the south but so are a lot of other people
I have to agree with you. He can be his own worst enemy at times.
Seems like some people can't stomach the fact that the South lost their rebellion. If you want to continue the Civil War theme then rename Fort Bragg to Fort Grant. Fort Gordon to Fort Sherman. Fort Hood to Fort Thomas. Fort Benning to Fort Sykes. And so forth.
Thanks for posting,
First I’ve seen it.
Don’t ask that too loudly - the next big movement is to empty the jails because they are too racist.....in fact, that is going on right now with the “no hold them on bail” movement.
FU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I see what you mean. I was there myself until recently. 'Who cares?' 'It's just a flag'. It's a small thing. Let them have the win on this one.
Let them have the win?
No more. We need to fight for every inch.
Yeah I dont get it he should make certain topics off-limits and talk the things that people really care about he should know that Chrissy was going to try to set a trap
I agree with him on the confederate flag I think the whole thing is stupid the whole monuments tear down etc. there are much bigger fish to fry
But sometimes you just Gotta put a lid on certain subjects theres so much more at stake
Stop playing their game
Flame Yourself,
The Civil War was
a Deep Wound to this
Country.
A Nation of 30 million
Killed off 500,000.
After 150 yrs the dead
Deserve Respect and the
“Why” must be Remembered.
The search sucks here.
I just use one word. Like in this case “Confederate” and boom there it is!
Yes, he should not take the bait for comparatively small topics like flags. Instead he should take control and broaden the topic to liberty and freedom and why communism is antithetical to those cherished concepts. Reagan did a fantastic job of doing that.
Oh my what will our south hating coven do know
What will Rush and Levin and Beck and NRO do is a better question
I love this president
Its worth posting every hour for the next month ...
No offense
“Flame away, but this is an unforced error and just a stupid thing to say in my opinion.”
I notice you don’t say that it’s not true. Do you think it’s false, or just that everyone should keep their lips clapped to the buttocks of the left?
I love our president for getting right up in the hideous visages of the leftwads and spraying them with the truth.
People who displayed the Confederate flag didn't desire to return to slavery. They did so as a source of pride from where they were from. Like, a Georgia Bulldogs banner or a Crimson Tide banner.
Only inbred, stupid, narrow minded, single digit IQ, thieving drug addicts could possibly think otherwise.
