Donald Trump says the Confederate flag is a proud symbol of US south

US President Donald Trump declined to say the Confederate flag was an offensive symbol in an interview broadcast on Sunday, saying it is a source of pride for people who love the South.

The Republican president was asked on Fox News Sunday if the flag, a symbol of US slavery and white supremacy for many Americans, was offensive.

“It depends on who you’re talking about, when you’re talking about,” Trump responded. “When people proudly had their Confederate flags they’re not talking about racism. They love their flag, it represents the South. They like the South … I say it’s freedom of many things, but it’s freedom of speech.”

Trump has in the past appeared sympathetic to the flag and symbols of the Confederacy of the 1861-65 Civil War.

In 2017, he criticised the removal of monuments to the Confederacy and said there were “very fine people on both sides” of a deadly clash in Charlottesville, Virginia, over the removal of a statue of Confederate General Robert E Lee.

Earlier this month, he criticised NASCAR’s ban of the Confederate flag from its events.

Breaking with several of his fellow Republicans in Congress, Trump has promised to veto the annual National Defense Authorisation Act over an amendment to remove the names of Confederate generals from military bases within a year.

It wasn’t Lincoln’s own land. South Carolina had lawfully seceded.

Lincoln invaded first.

It wasn’t his own country. South Carolina had lawfully seceded.

Apparently not, as it turned out.

Lincoln initiated it. He started the war deliberately. Look it up. His own letter to his naval commander afterwards confirms it.

So you're saying that the southern leaders of the rebellion were so dumb that they fell into Lincoln's trap and fired on Sumter? Doesn't say a lot about them, does it?

So you keep saying. History showed otherwise.

Then why didn’t the Charleston batteries fire on the massive invasion armada that Lincoln sent to seize Charleston?

So I guess we shouldn’t honor native Americans either since they too fought against the government.
Is the government building statues for them?

There is a twenty story statue being built near mount Rushmore. I wonder who is funding that?

The bureaucrats in Washington are not making you personally drop the rebel flag or cease honoring your rebel ancestors. You are free to continue doing so if that’s your choice. They are saying that the government itself should not be publicly honoring those who waged war against it. What is so hard to understand about that?

One of the things that made me proud to be American was that our government was big enough and confident enough to honor Americans who fought against it in the 1860s. This petty destruction makes us smaller and vindictive 150 years later. Plus it is doing the Dhimmos a service by hiding their part in the war.

Except that it is you that is engaging in the historical revisionism. I take the Confederate politicians at their word when I read the resolutions of secession they passed as the reasons for leaving the United States that it was about slavery, racism, and white supremacy

And yet when Lincoln gave his Proclamation Emancipation he only freed the Southern Slaves and not the Northern. The South as they were running out of young White men emancipated their own slaves. (Granted it was to continue the fight but it was the end to slavery in the South.) That part has always been overlooked. It is the history of this country both North and South that we have climbed from sin to a higher purer purpose over time. It is one of our blessings for being free people.

Should we raise statues to Axis Sally, Benedict Arnold, Tokyo Rose, and the American citizens who fought for Germany in World War II?

But again, I don't care what states do. And if the federal government decides to change their opinion of those who fought against us in the Southern rebellion then I don't have a problem with that either.

What a d!ck comparing my ancestors to Nazi. In better times little jerks like you end up with smashed faces in but keyboard commandos are soooo brave.

Well if it makes you feel better I'll only compare your ancestors to Benedict Arnold. Better?

Apparently not, as it turned out. Nope. It had. Nothing that occurred afterward has changed the legality of it. So you're saying that the southern leaders of the rebellion were so dumb that they fell into Lincoln's trap and fired on Sumter? Doesn't say a lot about them, does it? No, I'm saying they had no choice. It was be invaded without defending themselves or defend themselves. That's pretty much the choice everybody is put to when attacked as they were.

Then why didn’t the Charleston batteries fire on the massive invasion armada that Lincoln sent to seize Charleston? They had fired on an invader before - namely, the star of the west. This time they opted to evict the squatters after the squatters turned their guns toward the city of Charleston.

The difference is the Confederates were not traitors. They did not provide aid and comfort to an enemy or make war upon them (the states). They lawfully seceded. Lincoln then attacked them and forced them to defend themselves.

Or let Sumter be resupplied and maintain the status quo. Why was war their only choice if they didn't really want one?

Article III, Section 3, Clause 1. Look it up.
