US President Donald Trump declined to say the Confederate flag was an offensive symbol in an interview broadcast on Sunday, saying it is a source of pride for people who love the South.
The Republican president was asked on Fox News Sunday if the flag, a symbol of US slavery and white supremacy for many Americans, was offensive.
It depends on who youre talking about, when youre talking about, Trump responded. When people proudly had their Confederate flags theyre not talking about racism. They love their flag, it represents the South. They like the South I say its freedom of many things, but its freedom of speech.
Trump has in the past appeared sympathetic to the flag and symbols of the Confederacy of the 1861-65 Civil War.
In 2017, he criticised the removal of monuments to the Confederacy and said there were very fine people on both sides of a deadly clash in Charlottesville, Virginia, over the removal of a statue of Confederate General Robert E Lee.
Earlier this month, he criticised NASCARs ban of the Confederate flag from its events.
Breaking with several of his fellow Republicans in Congress, Trump has promised to veto the annual National Defense Authorisation Act over an amendment to remove the names of Confederate generals from military bases within a year.

RE: Already posted.
I put in the exact title of the article: “Donald Trump says the Confederate flag is a proud symbol of US south” in the FR search box and pressed “search” and it came out empty.
Nimrata Randhawa did not understand that.
A black Confederate soldier proudly holding his Confederate flag is offensive?
I probably wouldnt have seen it if you hadnt posted it again. Its not fatal to post something a second time.
I find search works best with fewer words.
OK, it’s the same topic, but I don’t think people will have to scroll through several pages of FR just to get to this topic.
That’s why I search for the title first before posting, not finding it, I assume that it has not yet been posted.
At any rate, people can choose to read that post or this one. No harm having two separate posts on the same topic with different authors.

Yeah thats credible.
Flame away, but this is an unforced error and just a stupid thing to say in my opinion. I see no need to clutch to the Confederate flag. Stupid statement!
He’s right. We will not be ashamed of our southern heritage anymore than our American heritage.
No ... I agree. Actually, I like when a topic is posted more than once. If I miss one, then there’s a better chance I’ll catch the other one.
Thanks for posting. Somehow I missed this article the first time.
I live in the South and run an historic site...with Confederate markers. I am am constantly worried about vandalism. This campaign of terror directed at history has got to stop.
Why is it such a pain to see something posted twice? Just move on to the next post. Geez
Please read my post #9. (Geez.)
Thats the part that bothers me. Trump has no problem with BLM flags?!
Hes not really saying anything that isnt true that flag is more a southern heritage thing I dont worry about Trump and these things hes running against a guy who voted for tax exempt status for segregated schools
