Colleges eager to cut costs amid a financial crisis brought on by the coronavirus pandemic have settled on an easy target: low-profile sports that don’t draw many spectators, attract a disproportionate number of white or foreign athletes and are relatively pricey to operate.
Schools ranging from highly selective private institutions like Stanford University to public institutions including the University of Connecticut and the University of Akron are scrapping varsity teams for sports such as rowing, fencing, tennis and squash.
The teams have small rosters and require expensive facilities. They also don’t make money for their schools. Dartmouth College, which is eliminating its golf program, will also shutter the Hanover Country Club after losing more than $1 million annually on the property.
Football and men’s basketball, which tend to be the biggest revenue drivers for Division I college athletics thanks to TV broadcast deals and ticket sales, aren’t being cut, though their fall schedules are shifting due to public health concerns.
Many universities are expecting lower tuition revenue as families face their own financial crises. They are also spending heavily on personal protective gear to try to bring at least some students back to campus safely this fall.
“Had Covid-19 not happened, we may have looked at one or two sports, not four,” said Jon Gilbert, the athletic director at East Carolina University, which announced in late May it would eliminate men’s and women’s swimming and diving and men’s and women’s tennis.

Any college, say again, ANY college that changes anything for diversity has just admitted that they are throwing standards out the door.
Minorities should be insulted, because they are simply saying that the minorities can’t hack it.
The minorities I know would object strongly.

I’ll bet race had nothing to do with these decisions. If my alma mater had a golf team or tennis team I’d be the last one to know about it. These are expensive sports to play and generate almost $0 in revenue for the school.

Colleges would be smarter to drop sports altogether and those who pay for it no longer want to watch it. They shoupd lose all of the useless frou frou degrees too. College used to be about getting an education to find a job. Time to get back to the basics. You can’t do on-line sports anyway.....unless you want to start gaming teams.

Most of those sports were there because they were cheap ways for Women to get athletic scholarships because - Football... Title IX and all.
The men’s teams are only there to reduce the complaining/help the women/share the facilities.
No Football, no need for any of these.

I always disliked the guy for no special reason and then I saw a few video clips of him on TV. Being baited into calling for violence and he would have none of it. He seemed genuine and if he had his faults compared to today’s leaders he was a saint.
And the entire direction of African Americans might have been changed because he would have hated quotas and everything else. Maybe that’s why he was killed. It would destroy the Democrats base
Well following natural logic, if BLM beats ALM, then BSM more than WSM. Of course there is no such thing as “white countru club sports”, but in Marxist doctrine truth isnt important. Freeze, polarize, ridicule, for “optics”.
Learn and be productive. We mistakenly think sports programs exist to raise up professional players who will earn millions and give something back to the college.
None of it is ever worth it and now that professional sports are nothing but liberal virtue signaling, it all must end.
I’d pay to watch Stanford tennis way before I would ever go to one of their football games.
Tennis is not expensive from an equipment standpoint. Their teams are small. They need maybe two or three racquets and balls. They probably use the college’s weight room and have small stadiums.
In liberal minds, blacks are like their slaves and would do the job cheaper than those expensive white people.
I’ll bet race had nothing to do with these decisions.
