389 In the early years of the 20th century, tuberculosis ravaged American cities, taking a particular and often fatal toll on the poor and the young. In 1907, two Rhode Island doctors, Mary Packard and Ellen Stone, had an idea for mitigating transmission among children. Following education trends in Germany, they proposed the creation of an open-air schoolroom. Within a matter of months, the floor of an empty brick building in Providence was converted into a space with ceiling-height windows on every side, kept open at nearly all times.
The subsequent New England winter was especially unforgiving, but children stayed warm in wearable blankets known as Eskimo sitting bags and with heated soapstones placed at their feet. The experiment was a success by nearly every measure none of the children got sick. Within two years there were 65 open-air schools around the country either set up along the lines of the Providence model or simply held outside. In New York, the private school Horace Mann conducted classes on the roof; another school in the city took shape on an abandoned ferry.

LOL
What do they do if it starts raining during class? Perhaps a rain delay.
Airy open classrooms were the rule until the 1970s energy crisis.
I went to schools with huge windows that were opened from the top with special hooked poles.
There was a ceiling.
Instead of heated soap stones, today we could have coal powered, steam heated floors:)
Give parents the choice of that, private schools with more ingenuity for handling the situation, or homeschooling.

OMG...I remember the hooked poles.
This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)
The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
I remember those windows.
They did let a lot of light and air in.
Kids really dont get it. This is all a fraud. When this first started, i would go to Wikipedia to see the list for the day on who died from COVID. Feb, Mar, and April they were all over the place. Now, barely a trickle, and all in thier 70’s or 80’s. Seeing more suicides than COVID deaths
Please do this in the NE, please!
Also, “Eskimo bags” is a racist term. We need to cancel this writer.
I have November 8th as the death pool for the NYT’s.
I am confident
What about the winter?
Everything old is new again. 2020 brings the return of the hedge school.
