Overnight protesters in Portland, Oregon decided to set fire to the city’s famous downtown Elk statue. The sculpture was donated to the city by Mayor David Thompson in 1900 and was created by American artist Roland Hinton Perry. The fountain and sculpture are officially designated as Portland Historic Landmarks by the city’s own Landmark Comission. The installation is formally known as the David P. Thompson Fountain
