Face Masks Really Do Matter. The Scientific Evidence Is Growing. New research suggests that face coverings help reduce the transmission of droplets, though some masks are more protective than others

Face masks are emerging as one of the most powerful weapons to fight the novel coronavirus, with growing evidence that facial coverings help prevent transmission—even if an infected wearer is in close contact with others.

Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said he believes the pandemic could be brought under control over the next four to eight weeks if “we could get everybody to wear a mask right now.” His comments, made Tuesday with the Journal of the American Medical Association, followed an editorial he and others wrote there emphasizing “ample evidence” of asymptomatic spread and highlighting new studies showing how masks help reduce transmission.

The research Dr. Redfield cited included a newly published study suggesting that universal use of surgical masks helped reduce rates of confirmed Covid-19 infections among health-care workers at the Mass General Brigham health-care system in Massachusetts.

His comments are the clearest message yet from the CDC, amid fierce debate over facial coverings, fueled initially by shifting messages from federal and global officials about their necessity and then by those espousing individual liberties.

Researchers from around the world have found wearing even a basic cloth face covering is more effective in reducing the spread of Covid-19 than wearing nothing at all. And many are now examining the possibility that masks might offer some personal protection from the virus, despite initial thinking that they mostly protect others.

Growing bacteria. As in legionnaires disease.
Scientists cannot do math
N95 can only filter .3 microns. Covid -19 is .06. Figure it out.

Outside does not matter (IMO).

Indoors, it matters very much. Density, duration, air handling are also important. But masks matter a lot.

Why are cases surging after mask mandates??

Inverted logic. Post hoc, ergo propter hoc.

It's the surges that cause the mandates.

Arizona is turning over already.

I was standing in line at Kohls this afternoon, when the young man handling returns suddenly and quite involuntarily sneezed.

Yes, he managed to partially turn his head first, but there is no question that without a mask his sneeze would have covered a much wider radius...including the customer standing directly in front of him.

Regardless of how difficult it is to prevent viral transmission in a sustained hospital setting, there is no question that even a minimal face covering reduces transmission of in common everyday situations like the one I described above.

"A COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) particle is 0.125 micrometers (μm); influenza virus size is 0.08 – 0.12 μm"

"Virus-laden small (<5 μm) aerosolized droplets can remain in the air for at least 3 hours and travel long distances."

"All of the cloth masks and materials had near zero efficiency at 0.3 µm, a particle size that easily penetrates into the lungs."

"Conclusion: Wearing masks will not reduce SARS-CoV-2."

"Cloth masks will be ineffective at preventing SARS-CoV-2 transmission, whether worn as source control or as personal protective equipment (PPE)."

Common sense seems to indicate that masks should help. But how much they help, and if it is enough to make a difference can only be seen by looking at actual data.

Soon we will know how much of an effect masks have, since in many locations the overwhelming majority of people are wearing them.

The correlation between actions taken to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and the actual rate of spread are not as clear or simple as one might expect them to be. Take a look at the modeled R(t) data for Arizona, available here. On the same page you can see the data for positive tests and total tests.

Note that the rate of transmission actually starts increasing in the middle of the shutdown, and then peaked around May 31st. Subsequently, the effective reproduction rate of the virus decreased until about June 30th where it continued at a nearly constant value of 0.97.

Looking at the slope of the R(t) curve, it was on a downward trend before the mask rules were put in place on the 22nd, and only changed slightly since then. The data does not support the contention that the Arizona rule to wear masks caused the reduction in transmission of COVID-19.

It is of course possible that the citizens of Arizona started wearing masks in public before the order to do so, or that some other factor caused the decrease in the rate of transmission that started on May 30th.

The “science” predicts more cases due to mask mandates.

First it was quarantining EVERYONE for 2 weeks; that didn’t work.

Then it was for another 30 days; that didn’t work, but deaths were falling so things started opening up.

Then protests were permitted; cases began rising in proportion to expanded testing. Since deaths and hospitalizations didn’t merit the bad news they wanted, they lied.

As mask mandates roll across the country, cases - and deaths - continue to rise even faster than pre-quarantine.

As I and others predicted, EVERYONE is going to be exposed. The irony is that masks are just going to speed it along, tragically giving many vulnerable people a false sense of protection at their own peril.

This is truly a man-made crisis and I hope ‘history’ judges the correct people quite harshly, as the true tragedy from these tyrannical mandates has yet to be realized.

On private property the rules are set by the owner.

People who spout off inside a Costco about their “Constitutional Rights” demonstrate their complete lack of knowledge of it.

Outside, it us another matter.

After all of the global warming, global cooling, climate change lying, I simply do not believe any ‘scientist’ from anywhere, anymore. They are all hopelessly politicized.

Some of the most biased, myopic people I have ever met had the letters PhD after their names.

Masks matter for bacteria. A doctor in Israel recently came down with a 2nd bout of Covid after treating a Covid patient. Doctors wear masks but they don’t practice social distancing when treating patients.
