A 23-year-old Los Angeles police officer known as 'top shot' is being sued by the heartbroken 14-year-old daughter of a man she killed, after he appeared to lunge at the cop with a box cutter.

Toni McBride, an officer in LAPD's Newton Division who has appeared in magazines and practices at gun ranges alongside Hollywood stars including Keanu Reeves, is being sued after bodycam footage showing her shooting Daniel Hernandez, 38, in downtown Los Angeles in April was released.

The footage shows that after instructing him to drop a box cutter he was holding, Hernandez appeared to continue to walk towards the officer.

camera lense makes it look further, look at the other pictures and you can see he is much closer. You can tell its the lense because look at the patrol car she is standing next to, its distorted long.

The terrorists of 9-11 commandeered and killed passengers of planes with box cutters but if she was a top shot easy enough to shoot his hand but they are trained to put down threats.

Or just fire into the air. The Biden way.

I thought it was through the door... with a double-barreled shot gun.

There's some video with Joe making a shooting motion and a recoil motion while in a long-gun pose.

My problem with women cops is they have too shoot because they don’t have strength enough to quiet a situation.

Covenantor :" concealment surprise shortens the available reaction time of the window of opportunity
to identify threat, make decision, draw and fire..."

Right ! All those require almost instantaneous time considerations,
that the average citizen has no understanding about.
That's one of the reasons why I am opposed to citizen review boards for police,
especially when the citizen on the board has never handled a firearm, or had to make a life vs. death decision.

"Should she have waited until he was within, say, 10 feet? No idea."

Whatever for? The man wasn't approaching her with a box cutter so that he could open a box. People unfamiliar with firearms seem to think that a firearm is some kind of magic wand. You pull the trigger and the attack stops. That is not how it works.

Look again at the video. The officer suffered a jam. Does she not deserve the additional time to clear a jam? No weapon is perfect in its operation or effect. That is just a fact of life.

It’s so LA, isn’t it? I’m not really who/what I am; I’m the next big sexy celebrity, only you haven’t heard of me yet.

Arresting a person is not supposed to be a test of strength. Any resistance to an arrest creates an unacceptable situation. I'm of average height and overweight. If faced by a 6' 5" suspect (like George Floyd) just exactly what would I have to do to "quiet a situation" if the suspect doesn't want me to quiet it?

Be fun to be shooting next to her at a range and a hot shell end up in her cleavage.

I’m not a prank guy, but that would be funny.

I’ve made peace with it. Resisting arrest is stupid. If a cop wants to arrest you, then you’re going to be arrested. Shut up, call your lawyer, and wait.

Don’t resist.

"... they don’t have strength ..."

I think most police cars are set up with a screen between back seat and front seat and have rear doors which can't be opened from the inside.

I think we could design a similar police vehicle such that a person who is stopped would be required to gather their papers and put themselves into the back seat. If it becomes impossible to assault the cop then it would become impossible for the cop to need to use deadly force.

Somehow I don't think the people who suggest "reimagining" the police have this kind of thing in mind.

Another possibility would be that a person pulled over would be required to report immediately to a police station to explain themselves. The problem with any of these ideas is that they depend upon cooperation from the suspect and that is the missing ingredient.

These ideas actually constitute "prior restraint"; that is, treating a citizen in a way that anticipates that the citizen might commit a crime. I think the minority community needs to realize that their tolerance for non-cooperation may well force society into adopting some of these measures.

You don’t drop your weapon when assaulting a cop, you’re dead. Everyone should know that.

We have a number of these kind of “police” in California.

In my own county it’s a blonde who makes sure that everyone knows her name, that she has a television contract, that she’s a sports star as well, de dah de dah.

Sexy celebrity cops.

They’re a disgrace to their departments. If you want to generate resentment and contempt for a uniformed force, no better way then doing poses like that.

She ends up shooting a guy in a situation that likely would have been defused by an older, BIGGER, more physical male cop?

There’s the problem. She’s pre-primed to go off - the ultimate trigger happy cop.

Not doing anyone any good in the current world, and a lawsuit where every tiny move she made is going to be hyper examined will let her know that the teenage videogame in her brain is not the real world.

How many other cops have a dead man behind them? Hardly any. Lots of cops make it through 20 years without firing a shot, and not because they’re cowards.

Her problems are...she’s predisposed to shoot, she’s a she so she has to resort to guns early, and she got intimidated by a mysoginist Mexican who thought he could take down a female cop.

All this is going to come out in court. In heavly Mexican Los Angeles, the jury will be all Hernandezes and Rodrigueses. They will only see a Loco Gringa cop and that’s that: $10M to the family.

Sorry to spoil all the fun here. That’s the reality behind Celebrity Grrl.

“Either way, I’ll bet he was banking on her not shooting because she was young and female.”

Women are the first ones to shoot. They cannot overpower a man so they shoot them.

“or just fire in the air”
Unfortunately that is illegal and will land you in jail, making you a felon.

You are restricted by law to ONLY shoot to kill, as you are in fear of your life.

Kind of crappy the government forces you to kill a person. :(

I think many men don’t think the women have the wherewithal to shoot. That they are too soft, too compassionate, too timid, too cowardly, whatever.

I suspect that these guys think they can sweet talk the woman or cow her by acting macho. It usually works for them.

Except when it doesn’t.
