US Tests Hypersonic Missile Which Flies '17 Times Faster Than The Speed Of Sound'

The US defence officials revealed that they tested a hypersonic missile that President Donald Trump has long touted as a ‘super-duper’ new military weapon.

The United States defence officials reportedly revealed that they tested a hypersonic missile that President Donald Trump has long touted as a ‘super-duper’ new military weapon. According to an international media outlet, a senior defence official called the testing a ‘success’ and added that the missile flew 17 times faster than the speed of sound. The official also informed that test was initially tested back in March over the Pacific Ocean, however, very little additional information was revealed.

According to reports, the US President has taken a special interest in the missile and he even oft-cited the test that the Pentagon had described being as ‘successful’. While Donald Trump has repeatedly made comments about a supersonic missile that is faster than any other missile, the defence official reportedly said that missiles being developed by the United States will not be nuclear-capable. Even with the fastest missile, it was also noted that the American effort still lags behind those of Moscow and Beijing’s already fielded weapons systems.

US plans to conduct 40 flight test

As per reports, the hypersonic missiles are traditionally defined as missiles that travel at least five times the speed of sound, which is more than 3,800 miles per hour. Given the tremendous speed and ability to manoeuvre in the atmospheres, the hypersonic missiles are also seen as particularly hard to defend against using conventional missile defence systems. While speaking to the media outlet, the official said that trying to defend against a hypersonic vehicle becomes very difficult to deal with as high speed and uncertainty in-flight trajectory are combined together.

“I read somewhere yesterday that Russia has the GDP of New York State?

Yea.....i’m worried..”

Yes. You should be worried! Russia has a nuclear arsenal as big or bigger than the U.S. What if only 10% of their nuclear missiles worked? I’m not sure GDP has anything to do with nuclear missiles. Just saying.

Let’s try it out on Portland.

if you could time a cloud of bomblets to explode just in front or right at a point a hypersonic missile passes through

If. Theoretically works if the target doesn't dodge much. Timing is the hardest part. It might only take 1 BB at 20k FPS. You need to guarantee there is no gap large enough for the target to slip through without being destroyed. At 1/1000 of a second, the target has moved 20'. In 1/1000s, your BB cloud might have expanded to 10'. Intercepts under these conditions have been demonstrated. However if the target has active avoidance that actually works then it might have a second or two to move outside of that 10' cloud of BBs in a direction the interceptor didn't pick. The interception would have to cover a much larger volume, and the probability of a hit goes down pretty fast under those conditions. In the 50's the solution was to put a nuke on the intercepter to increase the distance at which the target could be destroyed, i.e. with an affected volume a few hundred feet in diameter.

It flew 17 times the speed of sound for nearly 500 feet before exploding.

For comparison sake, what were the respective economic outputs of the US and Japan in 1941? Throwing the first punch can outweigh size unless there’s time to recover and let size take over. We had that in 1942 but might not after a thermonuclear hit. In a street fight analogy, I’ve always been more wary of the little guys with nothing but muscle than the big guys. Worry? No. Prepare and avoid overconfidence? Definite yes.

Quite a coincidence.

I was not talking about a nuclear exchange.
With the country of Russia and the USA the doctrine of Mutually Assured Destruction still exists.
Russia is not run by a bunch of psycho fundamentalist Islamists.
They will NOT fire their ICBM’s on us and we would not do the same..

So....Russia still has the GDP of NYS so what are they really gonna do?

Too many people ignore the economic reality for Russia.

They do remain a nuclear superpower although even that has been degraded drastically since the cold war. It does not take many nukes though.

Outside of that, they are in very bad shape militarily due to a lack of finances. They cannot even field their new jets and most of the production goes towards demonstrations for foreign military sales. Same for their newer equipment such as the S-400 or the new tank.

China is the emerging threat militarily, but they lack a strategic ability in air power, naval forces, and they suck logistically. They have a lot of soldiers and pretty impressive artillery, but without a deep water navy and air superiority they are not capable of going toe to toe with the US. China’s threat to our carrier forces is very real and they do have an impressive anti-ship capability if they find our flattops close to the mainland though. Supposedly their anti-sub ability is very poor as well.

The future of warfare will be dominated by wealthy nations that can develop drones and autonomous abilities to wage war. This is why Japan will be a major force in the Pacific in the years to come - China (and the Norks) have gotten the attention of Japan and they are increasing military R&D and spending.

It means you’ll run into your mother in law every two hours.

17x767 miles per hour(speed of sound) =13,039.

Circumference of the earth = 24, 109 miles.

The headline should have said whether it was a successful test or not.

Scramjet

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scramjet#Progress_in_the_2010s

Much of scramjet experimentation remains classified. Several groups, including the US Navy with the SCRAM engine between 1968 and 1974, and the Hyper-X program with the X-43A, have claimed successful demonstrations of scramjet technology. Since these results have not been published openly, they remain unverified and a final design method of scramjet engines still does not exist.

The final application of a scramjet engine is likely to be in conjunction with engines which can operate outside the scramjet's operating range.[citation needed] Dual-mode scramjets combine subsonic combustion with supersonic combustion for operation at lower speeds, and rocket-based combined cycle (RBCC) engines supplement a traditional rocket's propulsion with a scramjet, allowing for additional oxidizer to be added to the scramjet flow. RBCCs offer a possibility to extend a scramjet's operating range to higher speeds or lower intake dynamic pressures than would otherwise be possible.

We know the real threat...

and yes, it starts with the mother in law.

This little USA weapon test was 'officially' clocked at 5X 2yrs ago...

Scramjets might be able to accelerate from approximately Mach 5–7 to around somewhere between half of orbital speed and orbital speed (X-30 research suggested that Mach 17 might be the limit compared to an orbital speed of Mach 25, and other studies put the upper speed limit for a pure scramjet engine between Mach 10 and 25, depending on the assumptions made). Generally, another propulsion system (very typically, a rocket is proposed) is expected to be needed for the final acceleration into orbit. Since the delta-V is moderate and the payload fraction of scramjets high, lower performance rockets such as solids, hypergolics, or simple liquid fueled boosters might be acceptable.

Theoretical projections place the top speed of a scramjet between Mach 12 (14,000 km/h; 8,400 mph) and Mach 24 (25,000 km/h; 16,000 mph).[44] For comparison, the orbital speed at 200 kilometres (120 mi) low earth orbit is 7.79 kilometres per second (28,000 km/h; 17,400 mph).[45]
