The Washington Redskins announced Monday that they would be retiring their team nickname and logo, but had not yet decided on their new moniker. In short order, the Navajo Nation offered a new name they believe would be a fitting replacement for the NFL franchise.
Two hours later, Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez released a statement celebrating the Washington, D.C., area team's move, while noting that the franchise made its decision due to "mounting pressure and advocacy of Indigenous peoples...and many other warriors who fought long and hard for this change."

The Rather Be Dead Than Red
Singular
Like the Stanford Cardinal
What? The Washington Supine?
Wife and I loved it, esp. Your 2nd suggestion.
How about the DC Didleysquats?
Bet yet, sell the fanchise and move it to some place like Pocatello, Idaho. The Pocatello Potatoes.
I still like the Washington Foreskins.
Black Elk (L) and Elk of the Oglala Lakota photographed in London, England in their grass dance regalia while touring with Buffalo Bill's Wild West, 1887
Black Elk, daughter Lucy Black Elk, and second wife Anna Brings White in their home in Manderson, South Dakota, about 1910
That, my FRiend, is simply BRILLIANT!
The complete absurdity of even contemplating changing names in order to placate people who are implacable is a sure sign of mental illness. The team can knuckle under to political correctness but they’ll do so without my participation.
Wait - maybe that’s it - The Washington Knuckle Draggers!
Washington Sellouts
Of course, that might be confusing to some. They wouldn’t know if the new name referred to the team selling out to BLM...or our Washington politicians seling out America.
When thinking about a new name for the Redskins, keep in mind that the Washington Bullets changed its name to the Washington Wizards.
Squatting dog is a Indian name, call them that.
With all due respect to Golden State, since this is clearly a change being made under duress, I suggest a simple name change to Washington Warriors.
Of course there would be no hint of Indians in the new logo—
maybe more “honor the military” but it would quietly echo where the team had come from.
Agreed. They are foolish to choose a name or symbol that relates to American Indians at all, as some activists will continue to find a reason to criticize them.
Washington Foreskins
The Navajos have a point, but much better to honor the code talkers with their own monument in Washington DC than to attach the name to a not so great football franchise. There also were code talkers from the Lakota people and all should be honored with an appropriate monument.
Can’t use Washington in the name eitheryou know they’ll be coming for that name next now that they’ve gotten the Redskin scalp.
We WERE honoring their culture.
They think that if we remove all references to indians it would be better. it won’t. Out of sight out of mind. Nobody will care or even know from now on about indian problems.
The Redskins, and specially the indian head were great logos they should have been proud of.
The Washington Scalps?
The team emblem was modeled after a Blackfoot indian by a fellow blackfoot. They were honored at the time to be selected. Once again, its not about Floyd . . . .
