ESPN reporter Adrian Wojnarowski sent an email reading "Fk you" to the office of Senator Josh Hawley (R., Mo.) on Friday in response to the senator's criticism of Chinese influence in the NBA.
The note came in response to Hawley's open letter to the National Basketball Association condemning its new policy on players jerseys, and Wojnarowski apologized later on Friday after Hawley publicized the email. The new policy allows players to wear messages in response to recent police brutality cases that prompted protests across the nation, but does not allow players to select messages criticizing human rights violations in China.
"Conspicuously missing from the list of approved phrases are any in support of the victims of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), including the people of Hong Kong, whose remaining freedoms are being extinguished by the CCPs newly enacted national security law," Hawleys statement reads.
Wojnarowski tweeted Friday afternoon to apologize for his conduct.
"I was disrespectful and I made a regrettable mistake. I'm sorry for the way I handled myself and I am reaching out immediately to Senator Hawley to apologize directly. I also need to apologize to my ESPN colleagues because I know my actions were unacceptable and should not reflect on any of them," the tweet reads.
Wojnarowksi is a senior NBA reporter at ESPN. He has won the national sportswriter of the year award for three consecutive years and is famous for his eponymous "Woj bombs," or insider scoops on NBA trade and free agency intrigue.
Prior statements from NBA players and administrators exhibit an unwillingness to take a stance on China. Hawleys letter highlights the NBA's apology to Beijing after Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey expressed support for the Hong Kong protests. Instead of backing Morey, NBA commissioner Adam Silver "chose to apologize to the CCP."
NBA superstar LeBron James previously made headlines with his own controversial statement about the protests. Morey "either was misinformed or not really educated on the situation," James said. He later backtracked those comments.
"What offensive nonsense," Hawley wrote in the open letter. "No amount of profit can justify collaborating with a regime for which violent suppression and enslavement are routine tools of governance."
I am with you on that Brother. I am sick of watching these over paid spoiled brats.
They hit my limit 20 years ago, but welcome in, the water is fine without them.
[[[Im done with all pro sports.]]]
Yes, and the oppressed millionaires that go with them.
Senator Hawley should push legislation requiring ala carte channel choice on cable and satellite. That way millions of individual customers could cut off ESPN/ABC/Disney from their $9 per customer fee and the sports leagues and players would get that much less money too.
“Im done with all pro sports.
Let them get real jobs”
Best build more Prisons first.
NBA and ESPN are scum traitors.
That's right !
China owns a lot of people in media, sports, and swamp creastures in DC and various states. Gruesome Newsome for instance. Creatures of the CCP.
ESPN is Disney
They should move the NBA to China. They have sold their souls to them.
p
NBA is a disgrace anyway.
College basketball is the only basketball anyone should watch.
And even that is being usurped.
Adrian Wojnarowski would be fired on the spot if he had sent the same to UpChuck.
I’m done with pro sports too. College sports may not be far behind though.
Chinese slave camps are the ones making Nike’s sneakers. And now you know the rest...of the story. Good day!
Never have watched any “pro-sports”, and I am 70 years old.
Always thought it was stupid to waste your time on watching a bunch of ROIDED OUT, OVERPAID child/men playing a kids games.
Every time I heard that stupid statement “WE WON” from one of my employees, I would always ask them just what position they played during the “BIG GAME”, (rah-rah). I would get that stupid look from them like “what do you mean”.
Bunch of damn brain washed MORONS!
If the opponent in any game you play is ONLY YOURSELF, then it might be worth playing or watching.
You know how the Left always call the oil companies greedy, but here is Nike who makes fat profits selling shoes produced by slave labor in the Indo-China peninsula and sells them to mostly black inner-city kids who will shoot and kill over them.
If Trump had just said, "Nike should be making these shoes in Chicago and giving underskilled black people a fair wage," the election would be friggin' over already and Biden would have turned into a Mummy.
Hell, not just Trump, but ALL Republicans should have been pounding this point home.
