The novel coronavirus uses its spike protein (dark blue) to infiltrate host cells, whose machinery it uses to replicate its RNA (yellow).
=====================================================================================
A mutation in the protein that allows SARS-CoV-2 to enter cells might make it easier for the virus to spread or it might not make a difference at all.
That's the crux of a debate over a mutation known as D614G, which affects the spike protein on the virus' surface. The mutation is not new. It appears in low levels in samples taken from COVID-19 patients as far back as February. But this variation of the virus (nicknamed the "G" variation) seems to show up in more and more of the virus samples taken from people infected recently compared to early in the pandemic.
A new paper, published July 2 in the journal Cell, argues that the rise in the "G" variation of the new coronavirus is due to natural selection. The study finds that virus particles with this mutation have an easier time making their way into cells, suggesting that it is outcompeting other strains of the virus to become the dominant version of SARS-CoV-2. Other, not-yet-published experiments have found similar results. However, some researchers are not yet convinced that the mutation has any real-world impact on coronavirus transmission at all. Instead, it's possible that the G variant's spread is due to chance, said Nathan Grubaugh, an epidemiologist at the Yale School of Medicine who co-authored a commentary accompanying the paper's publication.
"The virus could have easily gotten lucky," Grubaugh told Live Science.

a virologist here said that it will have to mutate over time to a weaker version in order not to kill the host and itself.
In theory, it would mutate to spread more easily but be less dangerous. This didnt come from the poster here. Just my supposition.
I think it was the person who discovered HIV that said nature would mutate out the man made virus. Nature doesn’t like to be tinkered with.
Good Grief
This Shit Again...
I got lucky once and I got a virus too.
Or a rash anyhow, I remember that much.
And HCQ + zinc will still kick it’s butt.
.
We recently saw a woman working in her yard wearing a mask. Her house was a stand alone..not surrounded by neighbors.
Anything to keep fear alive in the minds of the sheep.
oh great...Covid 19 variations in Gminor .featuring the Main Stream media wailing chorus!

Remember it is pure selection.
A less pathogenic easier transmitted variation should become predominant.
All the common cold viruses (a third of which are Coronaviruses) may have started out deadly when they first jumped in to humans.
“We recently saw a woman working in her yard wearing a mask”
How do you know she wasn’t wearing it as a a dust mask, for pollen and allergies? I mean, that was the original purpose of these cheap masks. I should wear one when I mow the lawn so I don’t sneeze so much.
But yeah, I see plenty of people wearing masks in stupid circumstances.
What would be the reason that HIV hasnt mutated to a less deadly version..perhaps not enough time for natural selection
It’s not communicable like respiratory viruses.
And why are you assuming it has not to some degree?
Good one!
Another big lie!!!
Those people have no self awareness.
“We recently saw a woman working in her yard wearing a mask. Her house was a stand alone..not surrounded by neighbors.”
I had a woman chase me down in her car when I was riding my bicycle around the neighborhood. I didn’t have a mask. She didn’t believe you didn’t need one if you’re exercising. Plus, I was never withing 60 feet of anyone in their yard. In the end, I called her a stupid Karen to her face and she answered, “My name is Melinda.”
You should have said “well Melinda, stop flirting with me!”
Hubby has worn N95 masks to mow the yard for 15+ years now. Also if he’s brush cutting or running the weed eater. Somehow, in 100+ heat index temps, he’s managed to not die doing this.
Amazing.
