The faculty of Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, voted on Monday to remove the name of Robert E. Lee from the universitys name. During a faculty meeting on Monday, 79 percent of faculty voted in favor of a change to the universitys name.
According to a report by the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the faculty at Washington & Lee University voted on Monday to remove Lee from the universitys name.
Zoila Ponce de Leon, an assistant professor at the university, argued that the name change would be a small step towards making students from diverse backgrounds more comfortable on campus.
A name change is a symbolic gesture, but what we really need to invest our energy in is changing our behavior as faculty and students, Ponce de Leon. The members of our community who come from diverse backgrounds dont feel comfortable because of how we treat people it isnt just the name.
Jim Casey, an economics professor at the university, argued that many of his peers voted in favor of the name change to avoid being on the wrong side of history.
We feel like were going to end up on the wrong side of this as an institution and that it will harm us, Casey said. Everyone who was in that conversation feels that the best thing for our institution is to drop our affiliation with Lee.
Brandon Hasbrouck, an associate professor of law at the university, argued that his peers have not taken their fight for social justice far enough. Hasbrouck argued that the university should remove George Washingtons name as well.
It is worth exploring why the faculty has decided to make a collective statement on Lee and why the faculty has not included a demand to drop Washington in their petition

Richard Henry Lee could be an easy switch.
Will they remove his body from the dampus too? It’s located in Lee Chapel...
People should take some time to read Lees biography.
His record at West Point
His service in the Mexican American war
His character and experience which caused him to be offered the leadership of the Union and Confederate armies
The importance of states rights in 1860 thought
His instructions to his troops at Appomattox
His friendship with Grant
His service as President of Washington College
His efforts at reconciliation.
Then look in the mirror and see how you measure up!
Do they also plan to exhume Lee’s body from the chapel and dump it into the street for BLM to stomp on? During the French Revolution mobs did the same for the bodies of French Kings buried at St. Denis. For good measure the chapel itself also needs to be destroyed as it offends Muslims and atheists.
Mickey Mantle was #7....Babe Ruth was #3.
“...making students from diverse backgrounds more comfortable on campus...”
Just how the hell does the name of the university make a student feel “uncomfortable”????
We are in serious trouble because of the attitude and mind-set of today’s teens and 20-30’s....
“7” was retired because of Mickey Mantle...Ruth was “3”....
Save money and time...remove Washington at the same time. Then it will be the No Name University.
I actually don’t mind all of this. This is what happens before the collapse.
Higher education is going to contract in a pretty big way over the next five years.
They should just add two names and all will be fine Denzel Washington and Bruce Lee University.
I hate history erasers.
Thanks Nimrata Randhawa.
Why not just name it (Denzel) Washington and (Spike) Lee University?
I agree. I told someone yesterday that if I were in charge of HR in a few years and someone showed up with a degree from Harvard I would say, “Not interested. Anyone who paid $200K to get a correspondence course degree isn’t smart enough to work here.”
Just go ahead and name it Ralph Norman Liberal University to please the VA voters.
Robert E. Lee did much to bring the country back together in the postwar years.
They only care about erasing history.
Yep. Nikki gave them the opening they needed.
Liberals are now heavily researching if “&” has made any racist or homophobic tweets or owned slaves...
So, who owned more slaves, George or Bob? Just askin.
There is also the recumbent statue of Lee in the chapel:
The chapel added to the university buildings by Lee during his tenure as president of the university. The fact that Lee's body is buried beneath the chapel has made it tourist attraction for many years. I expect they will remove Lee's body and the statue and rename the chapel (if not tear it down, too).
If the citizens will appoint me dictator, I will promise to remove citizenship from some persons and remove them from the country. (only half jesting)
