Tulsa Police Sergeant Killed When Nonlethal Force Returned with Gunfire

A Tulsa police sergeant died Tuesday after being shot multiple times during a traffic stop.

Sgt. Craig Johnson, 45, came to provide backup assistance to another officer who pulled over David Anthony Ware, 33, for an expired paper license. The suspect would not get out of the vehicle when officers said it would have to be towed, and that's when things escalated.

Despite Johnson trying to use nonlethal force—the suspect pulled a gun on him and another officer.

He was no more killed by drugs than he was killed by the gun.

It’s amazing that Freepers who insist that “guns don’t kill people, people kill people” will turn around and say that “drugs kill”.

Drugs don’t kill people, people kill people. In this case drug users kill themselves or drug users kill others. Either way the drihs didn’t do the killing.

Officers are trained to escalate force as needed. When he pulled the taser barbs out, weapons should have been pointed with the order let me see your hands. When he reached for the weapon, lethal force would have been justified. Many officers are now hesitating due to social pressure and this is a result.

it is going to get to the point where the job of police officer is sitting in a police building only, and waiting for perps to voluntarily turn themselves in whenever crimes are committed- Cops aren’t going to want to risk going out on street and attempting to arrest anyone anymore because like you said it could easily end in death of the officer, or 30 year sentence for officer since liberals have ruined what the police force even stands for any more- law and order- - -

Once video confirmed the events at hand, Ware should have been strung up from the nearest tree, and his body left to decompose and be devoured by vultures and other avian scavengers as a clear warning to all others who might follow in his footsteps.

With 2 officers, one of them should have had his gun drawn.

If I'm reading the story right they were not aware that the suspect was armed until he pulled the gun so it makes sense that they would try non-lethal force first. I don't know enough about police work to know if a mistake was made on either officer's part but it sounds like he followed procedure. Criticizing him for using non-lethal measure first doesn't seem to be called for.

Which is why, with 2 of them there, they should have been prepared to escalate with the first officer using non-lethal force.

We refer to “drug use” and especially “illegal drug use”. The object of use is tool. The drug does not make the user crazy. The user makes himself crazy by using the drug. A drug lies in an inert state just like a bullet. Both of them require user activation to perform their jobs. Neither of them are capable of doing anything on their own.

After backup arrives, and not until then, the officer should give a clear warning that “Due to the frequent shooting of police officers in traffic stops deadly force may result from any misbehavior by the suspect”. He should only try to physically approach or handle the suspect when his backup is zeroed in on the target.

If the suspect is cooperative and the violation is minor, the officer should offer an apology and explanation that since many officers have been shot, policy dictates that they must proceed with great caution.

I was in Keystone, SD (3 miles from Mt Rushmore) for Trumps visit. The Trump crowd gave police and sheriff’s deputies a standing ovation when they went buy. There were 4 anti Trump jerks who were followed and heckeled out of town. It was ecstatic being in that crowd.
