Senators Push For ‘Woke’ Paid Federal Holiday, After Removing Historic One

The federal holiday swap would avoid putting US ‘further in debt,’ say amendment sponsors

Republican Sens. Ron Johnson and James Lankford on Wednesday introduced an amendment proposing to replace Columbus Day with (GOP senators propose...) Juneteenth as a new federal holiday to avoid putting the U.S. “further in debt.”

[snip] “In response to a bipartisan effort to give federal workers another day of paid leave by designating Juneteenth a federal holiday, we have offered a counterproposal that does not put us further in debt,” Johnson said Wednesday. “We support celebrating emancipation with a federal holiday, but believe we should eliminate a current holiday in exchange. We chose Columbus Day as a holiday that is lightly celebrated, and least disruptive to Americans’ schedules.”

According to Johnson’s office, the economic cost of a single federal holiday has been estimated to be about $600 million for paid time off for federal employees.

“We already have two holidays for black people...”

That’s kind of my point. Emancipation Day would be a holiday for blacks to be happy about of course, but it’s a holiday that celebrates the achievements of white people. As I said before, those slaves didn’t free themselves. The American nation did. Everyone should celebrate the end of slavery and be proud that we accomplished it—at great sacrifice.

Yes, there is a date when all the slaves gained independence. That was the date of the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution - December 6th, 1865.

You are right of course—I’ve pretty much posted the same thing as you more than once. On the other hand another summer holiday would be nice. Picnics in the park and all of that. But make it ours—all of ours, not just a black holiday.

Why take away Columbus Day? This is just a symbol of removing a celebration of America. Also the TIMING is bad for GOP. They are totally caving and capitulating to the mob. There are MANY great days throughout the history of this country, we can’t have a paid Holiday for all of them, and considering this was never mentioned before now, even by the first black President the GOP look weak af. They are extremely out of touch with the sentiment of their base. Don’t they even have a GUT instinct about what frustration people are feeling out here with the mob rule BS??

That is caving. They shouldn’t do it.

But I believe it is possible to turn this on the left. Champion Emancipation Day. Who did the slaves owe their freedom to, Republicans or democrats? It was democrats who stood in the school house door and the first President to open that door was Eisenhower, a Republican.

“Defend Columbus day if you think that his accidentally landing here and naming people because he thought he was actually in India is worth celebrating, even though a lot of people already were pretty sure there was land here, and frankly others had already been here.

But don’t pretend October 12 is “historic”, and june 19th is not.”

THANK YOU for the Black Man’s point of view. Our traditions, that are very important indeed, are to celebrate Columbus Day in honor of the man most people in this Country see as having “discovered” America. History is often a bit hazy, and the days celebrated not an exact replica of the original events, but they are nevertheless very important to the traditions and customs of this Country and have been for years and years. If new U.S. hating immigrants from third world countries, dissidents, terrorists, anarchists, Muzzies, socialists, and general haters of our Country do not like the holidays this Country has chosen to honor, then they can get the hell out and find another host country with more freedoms than ours.

Such as one where they will have the freedom to choose their own holidays, maybe Black Lives Matter” Day, or erect a statue of George Soros. Good luck finding such a country. I want a “White Lives Matter” Day, but I’ll be dead before I ever see it. This Country fought a Civil War to end slavery, and that war was fought primarily by WHITE men. But the “original sin” of slavery, commonplace in the history of the world at that time, long after most prejudice has been wiped out in this Country, is still continually used as a cudgel against “Whitey” in order to obtain more and more privileges and perks. Many of them against poor white men and women who get lesser access to federal and state grants, loans and awards to White students at colleges, and have lost job opportunities only because they are White. My how the pendulum ever swings. How do you think minority overlords will treat a White minority, hmmm? The same way as those they continually accuse of prejudice now? You bet they will once in power. Payback time.

If all things on a resume are even only somewhat equal, the default is to hire the minority, regardless of skill sets. I know what I am speaking of here firsthand from where I worked (a major State University where I was involved with the hiring process in my Department; and also I was in the private sector for many years). Whitey is the endangered species here.

Blacks are about a 14% minority in this Country, but recently you would think they are an 80% majority. They aren’t, they never will be, and many hate that, along with many of them just hating Whites, period. Those Whites who have bent over backward to right wrongs over many years now. And do you know whom I blame for the current turmoil in the Black community?

It’s white communist/socialist elites stirring the pot, along with elitist tech companies infected by White guilt and the corrupt MSM, this year in particular because it is an election year and they hate Trump who has been busy overturning many of their Obama Admin socialist policies, rules and regulations, perks and freebies, and improving our economy to the best it ever has been prior to the coming of the Chinese Coronavirus.

Trump will do it again if his enemies’ numbers are not quite large enough as a voting block yet, or this Country’s recent demographics haven’t nullified the dreaded White man’s majority yet. That will happen soon enough, but maybe not quite yet, if Trump is lucky.

White elitists and anarchists jumped on the BLM bandwagon, hijacked it, and appealed to an irrational mindset among too many Blacks that there is systemic racism in this Country. But both the White elitists and BLM have pushed way too far, and the racism that had pretty much been eradicated will probably make a comeback because of the actions of this year’s illogical, irrational protesters afoot throughout our land, and the attempt by these domestic terrorists to destroy our customs, tear down our statues, and ruin our melting pot culture so they can remake our Country in their own commie/socialist image. They hate us.

I for one am sick to death of it, and I will arm myself and defend my personal castle and our Country’s traditions against these traitors and their brainwashed, stupid, emotionally based pea brain followers. May they all rot in their own personal versions of hell.

This once wonderful Country is on the precipice of internal destruction, one election away from being a socialist hellhole like Venezuela and Cuba. You need go no farther for examples of what socialist dictators can create in their versions of Utopia. Maybe this Country needs for Biden to win so they can get a bird’s eye view of how a thriving economy and culturally mature Country can go downhill in the blink of an eye.

If Biden wins, our way of life will be destroyed so quickly it will make one’s head spin. I’m older; I won’t be around that long to view much of the crumbling of our Country, but I feel very sorry for the younger generations who will suffer under the yoke of socialism/communism and a dictatorship of the Left, not by their choice.

Actually, the elitist Libs had better sleep with one eye open because the perpetually aggrieved minority, once in power, will come for them next.

Bravo for your # 49 ! ...bravo for one of the best synopsis of what's happening to our culture NOW....and what the results will be in the future if we stay complacent and lazy.

I hope every freeper is bombarding his or her elected officials (senators, reps, governors, mayors, council members, etc.) with blue darts of conservative messages.

We have the knowledge of what to do.......do we have the will?

If not us, who?

“3. It’s too close to Memorial Day and Independence Day, “

4. The blacks now have black history month and Martin Luther King day. Another federal recognition for Blacks is not something Blacks really need to lessen their grievances.

I think there was major white slavery in America in its early days. From Wikipedia, which prefers the word ‘indentured’ over ‘enslaved’:

“Between 50 and 67 percent of white immigrants to the American colonies, from the 1630s and American Revolution, had traveled under indenture.”

Wikipedia refers to “white slavery” in several other countries, but prefers to refer to white slavery in America as “indentured servitude”.

Search Amazon for “white slavery in America”. I stopped counting at 10 books on the subject.

Any new or renamed holiday must honor all slaves in our past, not just black ones.

Columbus accomplished the 15th century equivalent of going to the moon, so his holiday should be kept even they want to add Juneteenth.

Add Juneteenth as a worthy, freedom oriented holiday, but finance it by reducing paid discretionary leave by 8 hours/year.

“Nobody, including you and MOST BLACK PEOPLE, had even heard of it until recently.”

It’s the new Cinco de Mayo. A “holiday” that no actual Mexican had ever heard of.

Juneteenth should be a federally recognized holiday. And Trump should make that happen.

Why should a Texas-specific event be recognized nationally? As mentioned upthread, there are more comprehensive dates with which to recognize the end of slavery.

December 6, 1865 is the day that slavery ended in the United States. That’s when the 13th Amendment was ratified, and until that date slavery remained legal in the Union.

Slavery in the North didn’t end by the Emancipation Proclamation, nor by the Union Army. Neither of those freed a single slave in the States that didn’t secede.

Yep, I’m aware. (I taught history for more than a quarter century. Lincoln understood that the Constitution did not allow him to touch slavery. But as CinC he could free slaves in areas actively in rebellion against the U.S.—depriving the South of an important asset in their war effort.

The Emancipation Proclamation carefully excluded Southern States (or parts of them) already under Union control—parts of LA, TN and VA are specifically mentioned. And of course slavery in states not in rebellion, MO, KY, MD, DE, & WV remained legal until either the states abolished it or the 13th Amendment took effect.

Up until that time, Federal law required the Union army to return runaway slaves to their Confederate owners, though many Union generals were very reluctant to do so. The runaway slaves were called ‘contrabands’.

You are right—December 6th is the true Emancipation Day. But as we’ve been told some people believe their ‘truths’ are more important than facts.

Having been a history teacher you likely know that the Royal government issued two emancipation proclamations during the previous insurrection.

Dunmore’s Proclamation, which offered freedom for slaves willing to take up arms against the Patriot rebels; and the Philipsburg Proclamation that more closely resembles Lincoln’s.

Had London won that war slavery in North America would have ended 90 years earlier.
