CHINA has introduced a new howitzer weapon to its western borders following a fatal military clash with India in the Himalayas earlier this month.
A howitzer is short cannon-type weapon that is capable of firing projectiles at high trajectories.
The particular model that China is rolling out is called a PCL-181. These vehicle-mounted weapons are relatively new, having made a public debut at a military parade in Beijing in October last year.

India-China War. Sounds good to me. Let’s send all the H1-Bs back to those two countries so they can help fight.
the Chinese side was around 48 or so, IIRC.
China does have a *lot* of excess male population that they need to get rid of, though...
No, it isn’t. It’s the old Paladin turret on a new tracked vehicle. There are in-turret upgrades as well, but the Paladin is considerably heavier than the Chinese PCL-181. Then again, they’re not really filling identical roles. The PCL-181 is more mobile on a road net, but the Paladin is designed to follow the Abrams and Bradleys as needed and the PCL-181 can’t do the same with their equivalents.
China has several problems.
1. There are 30 million young Chinese men that statistically will NOT be able to find a girlfriend or wife thanks to the one child policy. Guess what happens when the imbalance is this bad in a totalitarian society where ‘the government is responsible for everything.’
2. As a result of 1, the Chinese government needs to find somewhere to redirect that anger and the attention of the rest of the populace to be able to remain in power. This is why China’s been so anxious to saber rattle and find someone to fight in recent years. The Big Lie still works and they need it to.
3. Since they need 1 and 2 to work, they might as well kill two birds with one stone and get into a real fight where they can dispose of excess population - hard to cause trouble for the Politburo if you are dead, after all.
As bad as that thing is, a conventional torpedo wouldn’t bother it. And nobody uses air dropped torpedoes against surface targets anyway - not when antishipping missiles are cheaper, faster and lighter.
Hitting the Three Gorges dam from the upstream side with a couple nuclear tipped airlaunch BraMos missiles set to subsurface burst would be a better course of action. Honestly, I’d expect India to do that in the event of their Godzilla Threshold getting crossed, just to give China something else to think about.
Reportedly, it’s a semi-auto loader like our Paladins’ guns. It’s not known if the thing has any on-mount ammo storage but if it does it’s not much. Our Paladins carry some ammo internally, but even they have to be restocked by a supply vehicle and crew. In this case, the M992 resupply vehicle and a crew (the stupid automated conveyor thing didn’t work and was slower than humans).
The M109A6 can fire 36 times before it runs dry and has to reload, the M109A7 can fire 39 times. I’d guess the PCL-181 might *maybe* have 5 or 10 rounds on it. Then again, it’s not really filling the same role as our Paladins, being truck borne and not tracked or armored.
“...China will bloody and humiliate India badly.”
They might be about to “solve” the Kashmir problem once and for all by seizing all of it, and dividing it between Pakistan and China.
Very interesting.
“China will bloody and humiliate India badly.”
I don’t think so, unless India is flying older aircraft.
It’s rolling out? Is Guy Fieri driving it?
