Trump wants federal hiring to focus on skills over degrees

President Donald Trump is preparing to direct the federal government to overhaul its hiring to prioritize a job applicant’s skills over a college degree, administration and industry officials say.

Trump is set to sign an executive order Friday outlining a new direction for the nation’s largest employer during a meeting of the board that advises the administration on worker policy.

Ivanka Trump, the president’s daughter and adviser, is co-chair of the American Workforce Policy Advisory Board and has worked on improving job training to meet employers’ changing needs.

The federal government is the nation’s largest employer with 2.1 million civilian workers, excluding postal service employees.

Ivanka Trump predicted the change in federal government hiring would create a more inclusive and talented workforce. She encouraged the private sector to follow the administration’s lead.

“We are modernizing federal hiring to find candidates with the relevant competencies and knowledge, rather than simply recruiting based on degree requirements,” she told The Associated Press in a statement. “We encourage employers everywhere to take a look at their hiring practices and think critically about how initiatives like these can help diversify and strengthen their workforce.”

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, the board’s other co-chair, said the need for skills training and apprenticeships is as great as it was before the coronavirus pandemic forced millions of people out of work, pushing the national unemployment rate above 13% in May.

“Americans are eager to get to work but they need our help,” Ross told AP.

The White House isn’t eliminating degree requirements altogether but instead will stress skills in jobs where having a degree is less important.

Aides say the change will create more opportunities for Americans to work for the federal government by recognizing that some learning happens outside of classrooms.

Good idea. We need to break the requirement that children undergo 12-16 years of indoctrination before they can be productive members of society. Colleges' lies about racism over the past decades have lead to widespread looting, arson, vandalism, and attacks on police today.

This reform is going to be resisted by the Swamp—but it is the right thing to do.

One part of the effort to defund communist universities in the U.S.

Great start.

As a former Fed I completely agree with this effort. When I hired I looked at experience before I looked at a degree. However, if experience appeared equal then I did look to see who had more formal schooling as a tie breaker at times.

I’m a Fed. My 21 year old son with a freshly minted BS degree in Accounting/Business but no real office job experience is applying for federal jobs right now—this is bad timing for him :)

It will be interesting to see how the Executive Order deals with this new policy combined with Veterans Preference, Disabled Preference, etc.

A degree has been a silent ceiling that has locked talent out of white-collar management positions for a few decades now. Equating management ability to longevity as a paid student. Well-endowed universities and their virtue-signaling grads hit hardest.

Why the heck are people praising this?

It's an economic abomination that the central government is the nation's largest employer. Trump should be directing his daughter to cut back and optimize rather than expand and diversify the central government.

Also, plenty of bureaucrats have minimal higher learning experience as is. Does this lady think all would be engineers need to posses is how to construct lego sets? Screw this inclusion crap.

Please pass on to your son this wonderful question I received many years ago when I interviewed for a job as a Fed.

The interviewer took one look at my (too strong) resume and asked:

We have a lot of really stupid people working here. Can you handle working in that type of environment?

The correct answer, of course, is to lie: "Yes, not a problem. I can work with anyone."

;-)

We should not hire people with math and science education, that is racist after what happened to Floyd or something something Ivanka and crew is pandering.

As it should be. Our former boss refused to hire several people from within our company because they didn’t have the degree. Well qualified, good people. Instead brought people in externally who essentially screw up the system and make things worse, but hey, they had those degrees...

I thought the correct answer was "I'm applying for a government job. Working with stupid people is part of the job description."
