Earlier today I wrote about Nancy Pelosis claim that the Republican police reform bill in the Senate was tantamount with trying to get away with the murder of George Floyd. That statement came in advance of a filibuster today to prevent passage of the motion to proceed on the bill. The vote did take place and, as expected, Republicans fell a few votes short of the 60 needed to move forward.
Afterwards, Sen. Tim Scott, who has led the push for the GOP bill, gave a lengthy speech about what had just happened. In his view, its clear that the objections Democrats had to the bill were never sincere. As he put it, The actual problem is not what is being offered it is who is offering it. He went on to say that Democrats were clearly worried that Republicans might be seen as responsive to the issues of black voters. And thats something they dont want the country to see.
Sen. Scott explained how every time Democrats brought an objection to him he offered an amendment to fix the problem and promised to support it. Sen. Schumer sent a letter telling Sen. McConnell there are five things in the legislation that needed to be improved, Scott said. He continued, I said lets give them the five amendments. I sat down with more Senators and they said Wait, wait! Its not just five, theres twenty. I said how about twenty amendments. And they walked out.
A bit later he added, Their answer to me was You cant offer us 20 amendments because Mitch McConnell wont give you 20 amendments. I spoke to Mitch McConnell, he said You can have 20 amendments.'
Sen. Scott gave examples of some of the specific objections Democrats made to his bill. For instance, they said his bill didnt collect enough data on police use of force. Scotts response was, Put it in an amendment and Ill support it.
They said we need you to ban no-knock warrants because of the Breonna Taylor situation. I said Uour bill does not ban no-knock warrants for the Breonna Taylor situation. Your bill bans it for federal agents. Theres not a secret service agent showing up at Breonna Taylors door. That was a local police department. So the fact is they are saying they want to ban no-knock warrants knowing they cannot ban no-knock warrants tells me that this is not about the underlying issue.
There was a similar argument involving chokeholds. They said you dont ban chokeholds. I was like, I could have sworn I banned chokeholds in there somewhere. And then I read the bill. They dont ban chokeholds on the local level or the state level. Do you know why? Theres this little thing called the constitution. They cant ban chokeholds. Eric Garners situation would not have been cured by their ban on chokeholds because their ban on chokeholds were for? Federal agents.
Eventually, Sen. Scott said it dawned on him what the real problem was. I finally realized what the problem is, Mr. President. The actual problem is not what is being offered it is who is offering it. Took me a long time to figure out the most obvious thing the room, he said.
I believe if wed gotten on the bill we would have passed this bill. But that is the problem by the way, Scott said. What I missed in this issue is that the stereotyping of Republicans is just as toxic and poison to the outcomes of the most vulnerable communities in this nation. Thats the issue.
Sen. Scott said it was clear that Democrats had decided to punt the issue until after the election rather than accept 80% of what they wanted now. Why wouldnt you take the 80 percent now, see if you can win the election and add on the other 20 percent? Because the who matters. They cannot allow this party to be seen as a party that reaches out to all communities in this nation.
And unfortunately, without the kind of objectivity in the media that is necessary to share the message of whats actually happening no one will ever know If you dont see it on TV on MSNBC or CNN it must not be true.
Let me tell you what the biggest threat is. The biggest threat is that this Republican party keeps showing up and delivering, Scott said.
He concluded his remarks saying, All these cities could have banned choke-holds themselves. They could have increased police reporting themselves. They could have more data information themselves. The could have deescalation training themselves. They could have duty to intervene themselves
All these communities have been run by Democrats for decades. Decades!
there was an article the other day where Schumer I think, said if we win back the Senate we will Abolish the Filibuster altogether to make sure Joe Bidens agenda is rammed through.
Well Mitch what are you waiting for, do it NOW!!
You liked the title so much you pasted it twice? 8>)
Seriously though, it is an accurate assessment in my opinion.
Booker T Washington said basically the same thing about race agitators (my term, not his). The Rat Party, like “Black Lives Matter”,has no interest in solving anything.Their motto is “By any Means Necessary”.Just ask them, they’ll tell you.
Democrats are evil, and they are above all else enemies of all we love, and hold dear in our nation. Democrats are slime. Democrats are scum. Democrats are the lowest life forms God put on this Earth. They are the challenge we are expected to over come.
Twice is always nice!
Hey, check out that movie, The Postman Always Rings Twice! ;)
Things cannot continue this way. This level of hatred is unsustainable and I dont know where things are headed, but it wont be good. My hope is that something will happen to reset things so civil negotiations can take place, but Im not optimistic.
I saw that. It is for the same reasons the Democrats wouldn’t make a deal on DACA or any immigration reform. If they worked with Republicans and passed a bill, what would they have to campaign on?
They know most of their constituents don’t know what goes on. All they tell them is that Republicans fought them for reform, and they believe it.
Pelosi stood up there and said that they had delayed the stimulus package to get better benefits for working people and it was a complete lie.
The problem isn’t what’s being offered or who is offering it. The problem is neither side wants to pass legislation. They want to run on the issue and blame the other side. Passing something would detract from that.
One must remember; if a problem is solved and then continues to be an issue the ones responsible for creating the issue will be readily identifiable.
The true enemies of America and the American Dream will be outed.
MAGA!
Floyd wasn’t murdered.

Hopefully Senator Scott gets a prime-time appearance during the convention and makes a very impassioned condemnation of the Dem party and their treatment of the African-American community
The tile is taken from the very last line uttered in the movie. I had seen it before but it was a long time ago. As I was nearing the end of the movie I was wondering why it had the title it did, because there was not even a mention of a postman and I was almost at the end of the movie. 8>)
>>Well Mitch what are you waiting for, do it NOW!!<<
Exactly right. As soon as it’s to the Dems’ advantage, they’ll do away with that silly filibuster rule.
It’s a ridiculous rule that prevents bipartisan legislation. Take the present bill as an example. Without the rule, the GOP could have advanced the bill to the House. Meanwhile, in the House you have several Democrats who will be in trouble if they voted against it. They would demand some changes similar to the ones discussed in the article in exchange for their support.
The result could very well be a bill passed in the House despite the House having a Dem majority, one passed with bipartisan support.
But, no, instead we have the usual gridlock with nothing accomplished so CNN, et al, can continue to claim that the GOP has no answers.
There is only one solution the democratic party must be eviscerated from planet earth
Given that they control the media the universities in the minds of many stupid people wont happen anytime soon but we can only hope
Like Jimmy 'Two Times'......
