New York Times: America Is Too Broken to Fight the Coronavirus
New York Times ^ | 06/23/2020 | Michelle Goldberg

Posted on 06/23/2020 10:52:36 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

Graphs of the coronavirus curves in Britain, Canada, Germany and Italy look like mountains, with steep climbs up and then back down. The one for America shows a fast climb up to a plateau. For a while, the number of new cases in the U.S. was at least slowly declining. Now, according to The Times, it’s up a terrifying 22 percent over the last 14 days.

As Politico reported on Monday, Italy’s coronavirus catastrophe once looked to Americans like a worst-case scenario. Today, it said, “America’s new per capita cases remain on par with Italy’s worst day — and show signs of rising further.”

This is what American exceptionalism looks like under Donald Trump. It’s not just that the United States has the highest number of coronavirus cases and deaths of any country in the world. Republican political dysfunction has made a coherent campaign to fight the pandemic impossible.

At the federal level as well as in many states, we’re seeing a combination of the blustering contempt for science that marks the conservative approach to climate change and the high tolerance for carnage that makes American gun culture unique.

The rot starts at the top. At the beginning of the crisis Trump acted as if he could wish the coronavirus away, and after an interval when he at least pretended to take it seriously, his administration has resumed a posture of blithe denial.

The task force led by Mike Pence has been sidelined, its members meeting only twice a week. Last Tuesday, the vice president wrote an op-ed essay in The Wall Street Journal about how well things are going: “We are winning the fight against the invisible enemy,” he claimed.

In an interview with Fox News’s Sean Hannity last week, Trump said the virus is “fading away.”

Lying with statistics.

Deaths in the US are way down. That’s what really counts.
Number of cases remain high because testing is increasingly widespread. In some cases, anyone with antibodies is being considered a “new case”. The statistics on “new cases” is not something to panic over.

If only Hillary had won the election. She’d’ve nipped the Kung-Flu in the bud—nipped it in the bud.

The coronavirus hoax is over.
We just recorded the lowest number of deaths a few days ago.
We have done over 25 million tests with over 500,000 tests a day, so naturally, there will be more positives.
Most positives are asymptomatic or very very mild symptoms.
Stop beating a dead horse New York Times.

Not willing to get past their paywall, I presume she’s looking at cases rather than hospitalizations/deaths, or playing some other game with numbers.

Now, according to The Times, it’s up a terrifying 22 percent

The things that are terrifying are the unemployment rates, failed businesses and lost freedom and liberty.

"In an interview with Fox News’s Sean Hannity last week, Trump said the virus is “fading away.”"

As have several other knowledgeable people:

"Dr. Matteo Bassetti, the head of the infectious diseases clinic at the San Martino (Italy) hospital, said the virus appears to have become less potent."

Professor Adrian Hill of The University of Oxford's Jenner Institute and the Oxford Vaccine said the virus may fade before they can even produce a vaccine.

CV19 is no longer a problem. It’s just another low risk thing out there, at least in the US.

I ignore case stats. The death stats are what matter.

This virus has a mortality rate right in line with the flu after all.

If we protect nursing homes and the elderly and infirm there is NO REASON to shut a DAMN THING down.

except maybe government.

That would save money..and with they way they have been acting...likely lives in one way or another

Let’s drag out all the dead horses to beat again. Good God, these people are tiresome whiners. They’ve been whining like spoiled children since they lost in 2016. So there is really only one solution. Makes sure they lose again so they whine for at least 4 more years.

After their in house coup the times is less than the national enquirer.

It’s not intellectual writing nor is it informative.

It’s pure propaganda without even the thin veneer of objectivity and I wouldn’t even bother posting it.

When they say “cases,” they are saying “people who tested positive for having some of the viruses,” but they know that most people understand it in its proper meaning: “sick and under treatment for the disease.”

Since Trump said it’s “fading away” the nyt wants it to come back.

I’ve kept a list of daily deaths since 3/19. Wanted to know for myself, not rely on slanted fear mongering.
We are down to a daily average of about 650 per day. All you hear about is how disastrous the rise in cases is. Not so...
Cases aren’t deaths.
Mitigation only pushed out to the future the total number of people the virus would attack. Mitigation was to make sure hospitals would not run out of beds. That was accomplished.
Life is never without risks.
Wash your hands often, NEVER TOUCH YOUR FACE, and stay home as much as possible if your health is compromised. Definitely stay home if sick.
Good luck.
Notice masks are absent. Dirty masks put on with dirty hands over two of the three areas of entrances for the virus is suspect IMHO
