Rhode Island considers name change due to slavery connotations
Fox News ^ | June 23 2020 | New York Post

What’s in a name? For the state of Rhode Island, years of acrimony over an official designation with connotations of slavery.

But change is brewing in the union’s smallest state, as Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo signed an executive order on Monday taking the "first steps" to change the state’s full name: "The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations."

The "plantations" part of the name has come under increased scrutiny following widespread protests after the killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.

More stupidity. Be very sure our enemies are taking notes on how to take over the U.S. without much effort.

I guess I’ll have to reconsider adding plantation shutters to my foyer window.

"YALE needs to change it’s name, maybe to YELLOW"

That would be appropriate as the Ivy League would then have its Brown and Yellow universities...although Brown may have to change as it was named after a family that also had at least one or two slave traders.

Rhode Island, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Hampshire need to be combined into 1 state. They can name it whatever they want.

Delaware needs to be absorbed by Maryland.

California needs to be made into two or three states.

So the governor is unaware of her own state's history?
(I know, a democrat...)

Per wiki: Roger Williams was a Puritan theologian and linguist who founded Providence Plantations in 1636 on land given to him by Narragansett sachem Canonicus. He was exiled under religious persecution from the Massachusetts Bay Colony; he and his fellow settlers agreed on an egalitarian constitution providing for majority rule "in civil things," with liberty of conscience on spiritual matters. He named the settlement Providence Plantation, believing that God had brought them there. (The term "plantation" was used in the 17th century as a synonym for "settlement" or "colony.") Williams named the islands in the Narragansett Bay after Christian virtues: Patience, Prudence, and Hope Islands.

An “executive order” isn’t law. That is unless your name is Obama.

Plantation: “an estate on which crops such as coffee, sugar, and tobacco are cultivated by resident labor”

Imbeciles are constantly attempting to “hijack” words.

Nothing any worse than a rabid female lib....they’re the worst of the worst. All they do is make decisions based on their raw emotions at any given moment.

Given that Providence Plantation was settled by whites and had no black slaves, what is the basis for being aggrieved? Is it just another opportunity to display ignorance and bigotry?

Imbeciles are constantly attempting to “hijack” words.

They went to school, but the teachers were niggardly with vocabulary lessons.
