Ypsilanti Mayor Beth Bashert suggested recently that she had no choice but to support the reappointment of a black man to the citys Human Relations Commission despite absentee issues.
The color of his skin, not his performance was the key factor, Bashert indicated.
Since I will be crucified if I vote against any black person on a commission, Im going to vote yes, Bashert said during a discussion on whether to reappoint KaRon Gaines to the HRC at a June 16 public meeting on Zoom.
The comment drew immediate criticism.
Her colleagues said Basherts assertion wasnt true, and said she needed to vote based on qualifications. Some asked for an apology, describing the comment as racist.
The mayor did not apologize after three council members criticized her comment, which led to a remark from Mayor Pro-Tem Lois Richardson.
I said at the beginning of the meeting that we have a responsibility to call out racism when we see it and all of that is a very explicit display of racism, Richardson said.

I’m surprised she was so blunt about it...
Ka’Ron. Cute name. Has a nice ring to it. Hmm...I think I still prefer Da’vontae or Kaneisha (more traditional, biblical).
I hear the conversation...

“So you say On The Record that it’s not true, and i will not be crucified if I vote against a black person on a commission... Very Well then... Let us test that assertion. I vote NO...”

Not enough apostrophes. Gotta have a lot of apostrophes.
Re “she better vote for the black guy or she’s racist”.
How about the truth. “Jim, she’d better vote for the black guy or she’s dead”.
Politically, there’s no difference.
