Hadassah researchers pinpoint source of corona blood clots

Blood samples from Covid-19 patients showed sicker patients had a high concentration of Alpha-defensin, a peptide involved in blood clots formation.

Researchers around the world have been puzzled by a deadly Covid-19 complication: blood clots that can cause swollen legs, rashes and even sudden death.

More than 30 percent of Covid-19 patients suffer from blood clots, which create lethal blockages in the lungs, kidneys, heart and brain.

Dr. Abd Al-Roof Higazi, head of the Division of Laboratories and Department of Clinical Biochemistry at Hadassah University Medical Center in Jerusalem, has found the mechanism that causes the clots.

Higazi and colleagues published a paper last year in the American Society of Hematology journal Blood about the peptide Alpha-defensin. They discovered that this peptide speeds up the creation of blood clots and prevents their disintegration.

This background helped them understand what was happening to Covid-19 patients because existing anticoagulant drugs don’t impact Alpha-defensin.

“We took blood samples from 80 patients in Hadassah’s Outbreak Department and found a high concentration of Alpha-defensin,” said Higazi. “The sicker the person, the higher the concentration of this peptide.”

Higazi and lab manager Suhair Abdeen are working on a new way to dissolve the blood clots. They are testing colchicine, an oral medication used for gout and familial Mediterranean fever. It has succeeded in reducing Alpha-defensin levels and blood clots in mice.

They are waiting approval to begin human trials.

Higazi said if the drug can dissolve blood clots in Covid-19 patients, it could vastly reduce the numbers of patients needing respirators.

“These patients have numerous blood clots in their lungs, preventing normal blood flow,” he explained. “We can also give it to those with mild symptoms to prevent the development of blood clots.”

The article does mention patients. So I think the 30% figure applies to those under a doctor’s care. I’m not sure what the rate would be for those who’ve not sought medical care, but expect it’s significant for those who have CV, if clots are a common symptom.

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

The false positive rate was 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

If a quarantine saves just one child's or one old fart’s life, it's worth it.

No approval needed. These are both old drugs. If a provider wants to prescribe them there should be no problem unless President Trump mentions them first.

Or your governor, like our beloathed Sisolak, forbids doctors from prescribing and/or pharmacies from filling prescriptions on his proscribed medications list...

Why are so many governors allowed to prevent beneficial medicine from being prescribed? What gives them this power over life and death?

I wonder how many ‘heart attacks’ and ‘strokes’ over the past 3-4 months were related to this.

decadron does not need to be approved. it is in widespread use for a variety of conditions and is already used in some instances of ARDS

Ventilators work as well as they do for any other etiology of ARDS. The mortality rate on ventilators is about 35% same as with other causes of ARDS

This link is especially interesting. It regards studies comparing HCQ, zinc, and Azithromycin, or just the 2 drugs without zinc. Since it is being done with already hospitalized patients, probably not as good as results with newly ill. There are many intelligent often medically based comments. Unfortunately there is one place where there were dozens of almost identical comments, but then the really good comments continue. The general consensus I have been observing is that Vitamins C and D3 plus Zinc are all critical factors. Also I have discovered that one of the first symptoms of Covid is loss of taste and smell. Guess what a symptom of zinc deficiency is - loss of taste and smell!! A sign you better start getting a lot of zinc quick.

https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.05.02.20080036v1

Another article on “Zinc and Covid-19 infection - St. Luke’s Clinic” points out that the zinc is needed to stop the rapid reproduction of Covid, before there are so many that the hospital is the only answer. The problem is to get the inc into the cells. This can be done by substances called “ionophores, and their function is to transport ions through the cell membrane. Ionophores include HCQ and chloroquine.” In addition, “The aforementioned ionophores also include noteworthy natural substances, devoid of toxicity, such as:
—quercetin (plant flavonoid, found in many fruits and vegetables) - supports the immune system and increases the effectiveness of treatment of viral infections.
—phosphatidylcholine (a phosopholipid that builds cell membranes, contained in lecethin) - necessary for the proper work of the nervous system, mitochondria, immune system and also helps to detoxify the body.” Dr. Chris Majdylo 3/20

The above article points out that a doctor’s involvement in decision to use HCQ is advised since it can affect conduction in the heart (so-called QT interval). On the other hand death on ventilators can range from 5% to 80%, and someone here mention 35%. Elsewhere I read that HCQ problems with short term use (Dr. Zelensky does 5 days) are less than 1%. So which is more dangerous??? Meanwhile there is Quercetin and Phosphytidylcholine, now to find out what the therapeutic dose should be. Other supplements that I have also encountered as of likely help are Vitamin K, and Vitamin B12 by normalizing platelets and blood clotting.

I have been wondering if the “pain” of early Covid was primarily of the muscles or primarily of the bones/joints, or both. Can anyone clarify this for me. If for the muscles, in addition to the big 3 of C, D3, zinc, I would add calcium and magnesium as muscle relaxants, and also for bone. For joints collagen, and a therapy I learned about years ago for joint health.

Get some good (Norwegian?) cod liver oil (CLO). First thing in morning before eating, take a small jar, like a baby food jar, put 2 oz. of milk and one tablespoon of CLO, Then shake well and swallow. Do not eat for two hours. This is supposed to allow the CLO droplets enter the intestines without being digested, enter the blood circulation and go directly to the joints for lubrication. Do this every day. You can either wash the jar, a bitch of a job getting all that CLO washed out; or as I did, rinse in hot water, then refrigerate until the next morning. Whether it worked from actually lubricating the joints or merely from the added D3, I don’t know, but it is a harmless treatment, not very expensive and might do some good. Let me know if anyone has an “anecdotal” report. Cheers
