Trump loses 2 pivotal allies in his anti-kneeling crusade: NASCAR and the NFL
Politico/Yahoo! Sports ^ | June 14, 2020 | Meridian McGraw

Donald Trump has long had two cherished American institutions standing beside him as he railed against athletes taking a knee during the national anthem: NASCAR and the NFL.

This week, they both started to walk away.

Bending to the cultural moment, NASCAR and the NFL in recent days reversed course on their approach to athletes protesting racial injustice. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said he had been wrong for not listening to protesting players earlier and encouraged “all to speak out and peacefully protest.” Meanwhile, NASCAR relaxed rules barring kneeling during the national anthem and banned Confederate flags from its events. Within days, a NASCAR driver was circling a track in a race car emblazoned with #BlackLivesMatter and a NASCAR official was taking a knee during pre-race ceremonies.

The moves came in response to the protests that have erupted across the country in response to the killing of George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man who died at the hands of the Minneapolis police. And they reflected shifting cultural attitudes — polls show an increasing percentage of the population view racism as a big problem in the country and the protests as a justified response.

Yet Trump stood his ground. He attacked Goodell, wondering whether the commissioner was telling players “that it would now be O.K. for the players to KNEEL, or not to stand, for the national anthem, thereby disrespecting our Country & our Flag?” And he separately lashed out about a blossoming discussion about renaming military bases named after Confederate leaders.

The changing tenor from the two leagues could be pivotal for Trump, though. The president has long leaned on the front offices of each organization as he has publicly attacked athletes who took a knee during the national anthem, and privately pressured some team owners to change anthem rules.

Yahoo News is about as bad as any other media outlet when it comes to going after the President.

As for losing the NFL, it’s been lost. The only reason it even feigned interest in the President was because he was taking them to task and what he was saying was resonating with the fans. The ones that put money in their pockets. This season is going to be a joke. Empty stands, etc. I would like to say the opposite about the college game but it appears those seem to be taking a knee, as well.

As for NASCAR, the President lost nothing. If anything, the fans of that sport will be more supportive of the guy. As for corporate leadership, no one cares. Lets see how they feel if/when they finally do open the stands and no one shows up. Unfortunately for NASCAR, woke college kids, old hippies and kids from the ghetto were never what made up their fan base.

If the goal of all of this was to destroy professional sports, I think the puppet masters have done a pretty good job.

I doubt that will even happen. Football teams are owned by billionaires. Every team can fold tomorrow and the owners will still be billionaires. If viewership and support get so low, the billionaire businessmen will sell their sh*t or shut it down, take the loss and write it off on their taxes for the next ten years. The only folks hurt by all of this are the folks that work at the venues, the blue collar folks just trying to make a buck.

Sorry IP,
You don’t get it.
We, I speak for others, are not about to SUPPORT the offending sports. This means watching, buying fan merchandise, or buying any goods or services that the
ADVERTISERS of the NFL push. This is more than principle,
it is heart, soul and patriotism. If an entity, NFL or whatever, accepts unpatriotic actions from its members the patrons of said entity are free and I say obliged to disassociate themselves forthwith.
Sincerely,
Bat Guano

Do you keep a list of the offending companies? If so you should share it with all of us. Don’t forget to include your bank.

I’d sure like to think our folks would finally make a clear
statement by withdrawing their support.

We’ll see. My hopes have been dashed too often to think
this will end will.

Yes, the list is longer than you imagine. I am advised not to share. Sorry.
The usual suspects are included. TV Networks place first. All are recognized alphabet letters. “XYZ”

Hint: Read an article about Super Bowl advert’s costs, and it will be the best clue to who, how much, and how long.

No, my bank is not on the list. It is a company Credit Union that does not advertise.

I’ve been a strong NASCAR fan since I was a young man. I don’t have cable so I only get to see the races that are on broadcast TV. There’s one on Fox TV right now. Guess what I’m not watching.

NASCAR lost me as a fan. Football never had me so I couldn’t quit that one.

Trump will not lose one voter over standing for the flag. NASCAR stands to lose a huge amount of its fan base if crew members or drivers kneel. They lost me because Steve O’Donnell, their moron President announced that it’s OK to kneel.

In the last week NASCAR actually stopped a race on the parade lap so O’Donnell could pander to the race baiters. Then their lone black driver, Bubba Wallace could have done a great thing by saying “Please look at me for my talent” instead, he toed the party line and even showed up with a BLM race car. Then NASCAR joined the LGBTQWERTY parade, Then NASCAR outlawed confederate battle flags at their tracks, then NASCAR authorized disrespect of the flag. What’s next.

Thanks for replying and I do appreciate your comments.

And your “long list” comment is no doubt correct. We have been in a long, long war with the Marxists and they have made great inroads into our institutions.

But I still have faith that the American people will do the right thing this November. And as much as I appreciate your concerns (and your strategy) I just can’t bring myself to give up Amazon and my iPad.

Making a prediction that he won’t watch the NFL if they allow kneeling is hardly analogous to sending the army into Seattle. You can’t say you believe he is principled and at the same time say that he won’t keep such an easy promise. I think you’re confused.

Actually, I think the ones hurt most by this would be the millionaire players, at least the ones too stupid to manage their money correctly (a group that intersects quite greatly with those who kneel). And I'm just fine with that.

I'm also just fine with professional sports dying. If the left-wingers want to kill it, go for it. The complacency engendered by the bread and circuses is a big part of what got us in this mess to begin with.

Easy or hard. It makes no difference to me. Of course the Seattle situation is much more important. But, nevertheless, I don’t think he will keep that promise. I believe that because I think he is much too bright and principled to fall into that trap.

Don’t get too excited by all of this. I am a huge Trump fan. Far and away the best President we have had at least since Reagan - or maybe Lincoln. But he has a bad habit that he should break

Too bright and principled to fall into a trap where he doesn’t watch the NFL? Are you joking? It’s a bunch of morons running around with a ball, in between PC commercials, that is. This is absolutely the weirdest argument I’ve seen anyone make in a while.

And I’m just fine with that....I’m fine with it as well and they will definitely feel the pain once the checks stop coming in. And then ESPN will put them all on tv to complain about how white folks are the ones that took their livelihood away. But, to your point, they’ve made some money and if they were smart with it, they won’t have to worry. They’re decision to take a knee or whatever else they decide to do.

I think a lot of them are about to get an education as to how the world really works.

The person serving you and me a beer and hotdog at the concession didn’t sign a multi-million dollar contract with whoever. They’re making an hourly rate, putting up with drunks, working their asses off and when the team or venue shuts down, they have nothing. They might agree wholeheartedly with this fallacy that is spreading around about police brutality and for those that do, too bad - so sad. Because those are the one that can’t grasp that 18 people were murdered in Chicago in a 24hr period last week.

But, for the ones that are there just trying to make a buck to support their families and aren’t buying into all this BS, those are the ones I’ll only feel bad for.

LOL. Not the NFL. His proposed Seattle invasion.

I have no idea whether he will give up watching the NFL. But his claim that he will is just typical Trump. And if I was a betting man and we have a Super Bowl this year I would bet that Trump would watch it.

The headline is a lie. The NFL and NASCAR were never allies, much less pivotal.

“The NFL and NBA have players and management who are against us. They have, IMHO, negligible influence on public opinion.”

They are high visibility influencers. They may not make me want to emulated them; but many that buy their jerseys and hats and other gear are being influenced to some extent.

These influencers are saying evil is good; they are normalizing rioting.

Rioting is not a good thing.
