Houston Texans star J.J. Watt tweeted Saturday that kneeling during the national anthem is not about "disrespecting" the American flag or the military.
One person wrote, in a now-deleted tweet, that he was "pretty sure" the three-time Defensive Player of the Year would not be taking a knee, along with three American flag emojis.
Watt clapped back, responding Saturday: “Don’t speak for me”
"If you still think it's about disrespecting the flag or our military, you clearly haven't been listening," Watt tweeted.
On Friday, Texans coach Bill O’Brien said he would kneel with his players if they chose to do so during the anthem.
Watt has been outspoken about the need for more understanding and justice in the nation following the death of George Floyd while in police custody in Minneapolis on May 25.
Earlier this month, he wrote a lengthy post on social media that began: “Silence is unacceptable."

Our Stars and Stripes is the symbol of this great nation. Along with the national anthem, it’s about all that is good. We have experienced the forces that oppose it. They are evil and must be dealt with appropriately.

If NFL players want to emulate Kaepernick, they need to do more than just kneel. They could also wear socks that depict cops as pigs, for instance.

Don’t purchase tickets, go to games, or watch them on TV. Let these pompous overpaid a holes lose their mansions, have their cars repossessed and get a job picking lettuce. Boycotts and protests sure did make Chick-Fil-A cave to the Left. I’d say economic boycotts played a pretty big role in ending apartheid in S. Africa. If we really took the time and effort to look, I’d say you could find lots of examples where it works. After all your depriving them of the one thing they want most...money.
If they REALLY want to emulate him, they could be adopted and raised by a white family in Turlock, CA which is the picture of small-town America. They could live a life of privilege like he did. They could grow up and make millions being an average football player.

If the object of your protest is nowhere near your protest or if you have to constantly explain what you’re protesting then you have achieved an epic fail. When “hey, look at me” is all people see your message isn’t getting out. Your message is supposed to be more important than your ego.
